Do Hella 500's on the front bumper affect engine temps + mileage?

Wondering if installing Hella 500's on the front bumper of your 3rd Gen 4Runner, just inside of the headlights, affects airflow over the radiator?

I'm guessing that if anything, the thermostat is forced to stay open longer...?

Also, do you experience reduced mileage on the highway?

Thanks!

no and no

the airflow IS affected, yes, because of basic fluid mechanics, but its so negligible that you won't be able to tell. the same applies for the gas mileage.

My 2000 4Runner had the exact same lights in the front bumper. It did not affect the truck one iota.

Thanks for the info! Much appreciated.

How do you guys mount the Hella 500's? I want them to sit nice and tight on the bumper --- I definitely don't want them to "flop" around on the highway etc.

Maybe there's a simple way to mount and de-mount them, so I can take them off when they aren't being used... ?

I had a pair of KC pencil beams on a per-runner style bar. They were too deep to just mount to the bumper. The 500s are shalow enough that you can just drill thru the steel bumper and bolt them on. The biggest problem that I had was that the "bumper" is just a piece of bodywork (the real bumper is the black steel thing under the lower valance) and the added weight and the tight focus of the lights amplified the fact that the "bumper" would shake all over the place. You probably won't have any problems with just the Hellas.

Your fine, dont worry. I mounted 3 8" long ranges on my light bar - see below

You'll find out that if you take your rig off the pavement and your lights are mounted to the bumper, they will shake soo bad it'll make you dizzy while driving.

Agreed. I had one of the lights shake loose and had to tigthen it a few difference times.

No problems with air flow or gas milage

Mine shook on the stock bumper with the extra weight of the pre-runner bar.

This is how I fixed the problem.

Start with the cutting portion of the Satoshi Grill mod...

Now you can recess the lights into the grill

Side view - PS pic taken before aiming lights

Just rattlecan the exposed areas flat black...

Four holes = four lights

Of course, I've since upgraded to an aftermarket bumper and carried the light placement

Spraypainted the covers

PS - the stock bumper is available - Local (SoCal) pickup only

Any light mounted to the stock bumper (w/o add'l reinforcement) is going to shake...
