4.88 or 5.29 for 35's in a 96 with 2.7L 5spd.

So I just found out my 96 with 4 cylinder 2.7 and 5 speed trans has 4.10 gears after checking the gear code on the door plate. The previous owner put on 295/75/16 (33X11.2) tires and its just ok for power.

I would like to re-gear for 35" tires. I have a sonoran steel 1.2 lift kit and a 3" body lift but may be changing that to 1.5".

Would it be best to re-gear to 4.88 or 5.29 with the 4 cylinder 2.7 with 5 speed and 35" tires? And, if I decided to go with 33's then which would be best?

I'm tired of searching. Any advice greatly appreciated.

the door jam ratio code is worthless by the way. but with the 4banger i would go with the 5.29's.

thanks for the heads up. looking forward to this build.

Why is the door jam code worthless? Sure, someone could have already re-geared it....but who knows until i take it out.

is there a gearing calculator that anyone knows of around on this site that shows rpm and mph for x gear ratio?

fyi...put a 12 O'clock mark on pinion flange and one on tire. if when turn tire 4 times the pinion should turn 10 if for example you have 4.10's. 5 times for tire every 29 times pinion for 5.29's. etc...

Thats not correct. It means that the drive shaft rotates 4.10 times for every tire rotation. 4.88 rotate 4.88 times for every tire rotation etc etc.

i run 4.88's with a 3.4 and 5spd--and once you start getting into the higher gears (4th-5th) you start to feel it.

You are not going to get great highway speeds but i would go with 5.29's if i were you.

Yep, it can be a pain..i would enlist help from a friend and dont forgot the breather hose hook-up. I used a slightly longer piece and hose clamped it. If you dont get that on it is a PITA once the diff is in. but overall it is a do-able job.
