rust converters
I have some scrapes and scratches gathering rust. I recided to hop over to walmart and get some of that liquid "rust to black primer" converter.
Anyone ever used this before? Does it actually chemically neutralize the rust?
The reason I ask is because I used it the other day and I put a thin coat on. I still see some brown under the (supposidly black) primer. It could just be my eyes playing trucks on me though.

I disagree, Mike - I (well, Molly) wire brushed my frame and painted with POR15 and it's been GREAT!
The key with these converter things is that you still have to topcoat them well - they're not intended to work by themselves.

Well the wire brushing does a good job of removing a lot of the rust. You can't only use the chemicals because they will just effect the top layer of rust. You have to remove as much as you can and then use the converter. Like you said you have to topcoat it well and seal it off from getting any more oxygen otherwise the rust will continue to form underneath. It really depends on the amount of rust you are dealing with and where the rust is located.
