Who will get farther?
Going digging tomorrow night. Got a friend going with me in his Chevy. Who do you guys think will get farther? Read everything before making a decision.
92-94 Chevy 1500 - stock tbi 350, 3.73 gears, 39" boggers, OPEN diffs, and about 35 degrees of angle on the front CVs
My 87 4runner - swapped in 22RE Turbo, Stock 4.10s (just right), front and rear lockers, 33x12.5 Bighorns (22psi front and back) full tread, cranked t-bars, about 13" of ground clearance under the front A-arm crossmember, but the CVs hold up fine with the locker, and a VERY spirited driver/experienced mud bogger

I don't think the ruts are all that deep. And I've never been there before so I don't know how soft or thick the stuff is. It shouldn't really effect me. But I'm thinking he'll have a hard time turning over 39s fast enough to keep them clean and biting.

With mud, all bets are off - it ALL depends on what kind of mud they get.

Although he doesn't have a 22RE you'd still be surprised at the power loss even with a V8. I have a 92 F150 with a fuel injected 302 and I had TONS more power with the stock 235s than with 31s and 33s. I keep 33s on it now, and I refuse to go any bigger without regearing. I have 3.55 gears in that truck. Now he does have 3.73s, but he's also only tbi, and I think once you get past 35 inch tires you pretty much should regear, even with a 350. I mean 39s are a lot of tire, and 3.73s are nothing with a stock 350.
This same truck, with 36s on it, did not get as far as me in a pit a few months ago. I only had a rear locker then, and he hit it faster than me, but I still got a litle farther than him.

put it this way, ruts, and mud depth are the name of the game. if you guys go in deep mud/ruts he will pwn you! tire size does matter in that situation. lockers don't do squat when all 4 tires are off the ground.
but if your just going on some muddy trails, not deep bogs! then your rig should out perform his.

You all have to remember, we're not talking 22RE power here ... the bigger the motor, the less relevant the gearing becomes. Also, the lower gears are going to provide more wheelspeed. The 2x spinup factor of the open diff MAY help also.

Yeah, but we are talking about a stock chevy 350. Not by anymeans that powerfull in stock form. Jumping from a 31-39" tire is big, even for a v8. I remember a local guy, driving an older f-350, his tires were HUGE, but his truck could bearly make it up an incline at low rpm/speed. It was hilarious

Depends who goes first on the same line. If he deepens the ruts before you get in there, then unfare advantage to him for tire size. But , the lockers f&r will likely push you further. Your rig is likely at least 1000lbs lighter too.
Lighter weight and Locked wins INHO.

Well I was pretty disappointed with the mud. They were pretty deep ruts and a slick bottom, and water covering them. Nothing really thick. I used first gear in 2 wheel drive the whole way through. I wasn't even going that fast. Just kinda blipped the throttle on the entrance of each hole and held it about about 3000rpm and ate through at a walking pace.
The Chevy guy put it in 4wd when he turned onto the powerline. Not sure why. But anyway, he needed it. He went through one set of ruts that were off camber to the passenger side a little, and he crawled through slowly with only his front and rear passenger side tires spinning. It was pretty funny.
Conclusion: I know that at least in 2wd I will continue to own him. And Im really willing to bet even in deeper stuff I would have him. Only in deeeeep ruts with a hard bottom do I think he would do better.
And unless we get some killer rain this winter there is nothing near me that is really challenging with both lockers in. I may bolt on a set of 235/75-15 Michelin street tires on and go have fun in some mud. A little more challenge-there's nothing like wheeling in what feels like a stock truck.
