Myth or Fact? : Stock rims balance better than non stock rims?

Sounds weird to me since I would say half of the Toyota trucks I see out there don't have stock rims.

The guy at my local wheel/tire shop said that quote: "Toyota trucks are finicky to balance." He was saying Toyota stock rims are hubcentric and aftermarket rims are not and that most people that use aftermarket rims on their Toyota trucks have problems with their tires balancing. He was saying stock Toyota rims balance better due to them being hubcentric. Is this true? He is saying Toyota rims are better and they don't even sell those so I know he's not trying to sell me anything.

Sounds weird to me. Will my wheels/tires actually balance out better if I go with a stock wheel?

I'd say i've balanced/installed over 1000 sets of tires, easily.

stock rims in general balance out better than most aftermarket rims... unless they require sticky weights on the inside

however, high quality cast and high quality forged (aka expensive) rims balance just as good as oem rims

Actually, the Toyota wheels are lug-centric while many after market wheels are hub centric:

And it is for this reason that they balance better on a Toyota. BAsically you have the circle that is defined by the 6 lug bolt holes and you have the circle defined by the hole in the center of the rim. If those two holes do not share the exact same center point, then you can run into problems since most tire balancing machines use a cone in the center hole to center the wheel/tire on the machine. To properly balance a lug centric wheel, you need to bolt on an adapter to the lug bolt holes:

My guess as to why the OEM wheels balance better is that likely extra care was taken to ensure concentric lug bolt and center hole circles so that those wheels would balance properly on a typical hub centered balancing machine.

So if I am understanding right, basically after reading that article it sounds like OEM and aftermarket rims balance about the same-meaning they are all kinda hit or miss. The guy at the tire shop is totally sure that the OEMs will balance better but i don't see really why they would LOL. Thanks for all the info!

If balanced properly for the vehicle, then both balance fine. As I mentioned, I think the issue is balancing lug centered wheels on a hub centered balancing machine. And while the wheel/tire will balance fine on the machine, the problem lies in putting a hub balanced wheel on a lug centered axle if there is any issue with the centering of the lug and hub holes. So you put a perfectly balanced (on a hub centered machine) wheel on a lug centered axle and on the vehicle you get vibration if the lug and hub hole circles are not identical.
