Has anyones roofrack started peeling ,it's coming off in big flakes, I had the roof repainted a while back and wonder if that had anything to do with it??( harsh cleaners thinners etc(MEK)???

I bet they didn't remove the roof rack when they painted, or if they did, they cleared your roof rack as well.

 

I pulled mine off and rattle canned it black after sandblasting it and you can't even tell it's been repainted total cost was
$3.49 for the paint
$5.00 for sandbox sand
$25 bucks for a sears cheapy sandblaster barrel canister thing works for small stuff

 

I bought a new one on ebay a few years back.

 

The roof rack on my 96 4runner the paint is fine but the 2000 I have and the 2000 4runner that my parents have the paint is flaking off.

I wonder if it's just the paint that was used at the time of manfacturing.

 

mine started to peel so i took em off and painted a stainless steel to match my skid plate. it is the only one ive ever seen like it.

 

2001 and mine peeled as well...took em off and painted them again looks good and hopefully will last a lot longer

 

like everyone has said...i have a 2000 and i took mine off and painted them, looks great...

 

The crossbars (right on top of the roof) are peeling - 2000 SR5

I was planning on painting then w/ duplicolor factory match rattle can sometime - but I am looking for some non-skid rubber strips w/ a 3m backing to stick on top of them to hold stuff more secure.

2001 4runner here too, rattle canned over it and its not perfect but nobody would notice. MUCH better than it was

 

Mines not peeling but definitly painted. if i keep my truck it's getting repainted plus all the black pieces are going to get repaited as well, rack, cowl, black trim on doors.

 

thanks, so it looks like it prob didn't have anything to do w/ the bodyshop job on the roof Did you guys go flat or shiny????

 

I have a 2000 also and mine peeled back in about 2003...just out of warranty...and my 4Runner stays in the garage a lot!

 

Mine is flat black no shiny up there
