Which 33X10.5s to buy

I'm finally bumping up from 31s to 33s and am trying to decide on which tire to buy. In the past I've ran 31" BFG ATs which have been great for all the wheelin I do (dunes, rocks, dirt, very little mud). I always run them at 15PSI offroad.

The only problem with them is that I keep putting small tears in the sidewall. I've only had my set of BFGs for two months and I've only put 700 miles on them but somehow I put two small slashs on the first layer of the tire. Before these I had a used set of BFG ATs which I also managed to put numerous cuts in the tires outer layer. I've never gotten through two layers, but if that tire was to last 50,000 miles I might have eaten through the whole sidewall. Plus in just 700 miles I've managed to rip off a few of the outermost lugs on the tires.

My question is, should I stick with BFGs, or is there a better option for this type of wheelin? I believe I can get some Super Swampers in the 33X10.5X15 size, but is there anything else? How are the SS's in soft sand? Do they have a stronger sidewall compared to the BFG ATs?

There's a sale at Costco right now and I can get a set of 33X10.5" BFG ATs mounted for just $650, so I'll have to decide soon. Thanks

Oh yeah, and on a side note if anyone in Socal is looking for a set of 31" tires I have a almost new set of BFG ATs
And I'll even throw in 3 more BFGs with low tread for spares

i had the 34X10.5R15 swamper LTBs on my old '79. they are a true 33" tire, not so much a 34.

if you can handle the noise and bias ply characteristics, they are a great offroad tire. other than that, it'd probably be a good idea to stick with BFGs, especially if you're driving it every day.

^^^^ What He Said ....

I think BFGs are some of the best for the buck. Look at some of their other models besides A/T... The M/T KM2 looks kewl.

I had the Nittos and would air them down to 15 psi and never had a problem with rock tears and they balance pretty well also.

I am running Toyo MT's right now and air them down to 8psi and have never had a problem on the rocks. Both of these are a great tire--alot of us run them in the group.........and we hit some pretty hard stuff with no problems.....no tears--easy to balance and they wear well on the street.

Unfortunately, neither the Nittos or Toyos are available in 33x10.50-15.

The selection is pretty limited ... if you could do 16" wheels, the most attractive option IMHO is the Trxus MT in 255/85-16

Costco probably won't mount the 33s for you. They will only mount whatever came stock on your vehicle.

When I asked, they said they would mount them on the rims, but could not install them on the vehicle.

I forgot to mention that I don't drive this everyday, I only drive it to and from the trails.

Money is pretty tight at the moment so I really can't bump up to 16"

Just got off the phone with Costco, turns out they'll only mount tires 3% different then the stock size. On the bright side, they'll sell me the tires $10 cheaper a tire If I mount them up myself. Hell, if I knew this when I bought my 31X0.5X15s from them, I could have saved myself $40.

If anyone is interested they have a sale going on until October 12th, $60 off on any set of 4 BFGs. So it's $610 to have a set of 33X10.5X15s ATs mounted and balanced or $660 for a set of MTs.

How are you going to mount tires yourself? Well, i guess with some tire spoons you COULD mount them yourself, but you're gonna be hard pressed to balance them.

I personally have a preferance for BFG A/T's but Duellers are pretty sweet too.

on second thought the mt's dont have a terribly strong sidewall compared to some like 904_runner's
