mechanical fuel pump

I put a new airtex autozone fuel pump on my 87 toyota,it quit the next day,the next one lasted a week, the third one lasted 3 weeks.I put the old original one back on that started leaking at the diaphram hole and drive it to autozone everytime,lol.....the old one lasted 9 years. I put a new timing chain and comp. cam with a new head gasket on it recently.I used the same fuel pump lobe on the new cam....any ideas what might be happening?thanks
The truck quits.I pull the fuel line off and turn it over and theres no gas,I put the old leaking pump back on and drive off

Weird, could just be a bad run with the aftermarket pump(s) your using? sorta like aftermarket clutch (master/slave) cylinders tend to go bad quick.

Might be worth the $ to get a OEM pump. It's weird the stocker failed tho, this is the first time I've ever heard of one going bad. =/

The lobe wouldnt effect anything, It doesnt wear and only goes on one way.

I took all the emission junk off the truck, there is only the vacuum advance from the dist. going to the carb, the truck runs perfect. The three fuel lines on the pump are the one to the carb, one from the tank and the third one to the tank,I guess as a return.I don't see how that could affect the pump,or could it?

maybe if the return and IN lines are backwards? But im not sure it'd even run in that case. I honestly can't remember what the pickup looks like in the fuel tank been a year since I looked at one =/

The problem is Airtex and Autozone. Try one from Napa or the dealer.

and maybe make sure that the cam eccentric / pump stroke is set properly.
