Title says it all. Put a new clutch in 'er and went to put the tranny back in, but it gets to about an inch and a half away from the block and it stops. I bout some M12-1.25x100 bolts (longer than the tranny bolts) and got them to thread in, but it won't suck the tranny in. Tried rockin', and slidin', and everything else, but I can't seem to get it to go in. What's the trick here?

 

its not lined up correctly....keep fiddling with it and you''ll get it eventually.

 

Get 2 tranny bolts and cut the heads off, then cut a slit into the the end for a flat head screwdriver. Use these as guide pins. Screw the guide pins into the block, one on each side and then try to put the tranny into place. once in place start a few bolts and remove the guide pins with a screw driver.

It also helps if you make sure there is no rust in the pilot hole, and put a light coat of anti-sieze on the surface.

If that's not working you must not have the angle right.

 

try turning the tranny flange maybe splines are aligned!!!!!

Make sure your clutch alignment tool is removed... did I ever mention how heavy the tranny/t-case combo is?

Yeah, I stuck it in there. Went for lunch and my dumbass forgot it when we were trying to shove it back in....

 

Try putting the trans in gear, then having a helper rotate the flange on the transfer case. It will rotate the input shaft, helping the splines to align better.

However, make sure you have your angles correct. If its tilted, it wont go it. Buying longer bolts and forcing it together is about the dumbest thing you can do....you're asking for broken parts that way.

 

weighs a hell of alot less than the auto/t-case combo. It was a godsend when i got to stuff the manual up there


sucks about leaving the tool. ive had throwout bearing fall off before without me knowing and getting everything back together

OUch on the bearing! Figuring out the tool was in there only took a few mins. But when holding that whole assembly on your chest... a few seconds feels alot longer!

 

I didn't force it. I just used the longer bolts as guide pins like said before, except I did not have to cut off the heads.

 

I had a similar problem. It was caused by damage to the splines on the clutch disk from trying to force the input shaft splines into the clutch disk. I removed the trans, dressed off the burrs on the clutch , and put it together.

last clutch I did I fought with the trans for about 2 hours (on my back in a gravel driveway with a floor jack ), right when I was about to give up and walk away for the day I gave it one last shove and it slid home . . . .

 

Put the shifters in and put it in gear. Went in first try. Got everything else put together and took 'er for a spin to find out that I had a blown brake line. Just got that on too, now waiting for help to bleed them. Should be back on the road soon. Thanks guys.

 

Good job dude. It sure is a satisfying feeling when that tranny finally slides into place.

Over the weekend I put a clutch in a 2002 jetta TDI. Mating the transaxle to the engine was not bad, but actually getting the transaxle weaseled up into the tight engine compartment was a real biotch. Afetr finally getting it up into place and a few bolts in I noticed the clutch fork and throw out bearing laying on the floor. I think I said "oh darn" or something like that...
