87' Pickup backfires trying to revv up

Ok so here's the problem. I bought a 1987 Toyota Pickup, 22R (91k) , 4 speed, 2 wheel drive. The truck has sat for 6 years, never run. We removed the air cleaner to try and get the truck running. The only way we could get the truck to start would be to pour some gas into the carb. By doing that the truck would start and run at 1/2 throttle or more, but the truck would not idle. We put a carb on from an identical truck only this one was a 1988. Same problem, no change. We put the fuel pump on from the 1988, same problem, no change. We then realized the air cleaner needed to be on the truck with all the vaccum lines connected. The truck will now sometimes start on key, no gas pouring needed. The truck idles now, but backfires and boggs when trying to revv it up.
Any idea's?
Thanks

vacuum leak, plugged jets in the carb due to varnishing, timing.

Vacuum leak? Where should I start?
Plugged jets? Always a possibility, but it worked fine when it was on the 88'.
Timing? Could be that too.

vacuum leaks- take something like b22 carb cleaner or other spray injector or carb cleaner, and with the engine running, spray in short bursts through the straw they give you along each vacuum hose. when you hear the idle speed change, there is a leak in the vicinity of where you sprayed.
plugged jets- well if the carb worked on another vehicle... put that on hold.
timing- yep. check it.

and a fuel filter replacement wouldn't hurt at all, as well as check the other ignition components- plugs, wires, cap, rotor, coil, etc.

If it sat for 6 years, I'd drop the gas tank have it cleaned out, or replace it

did you check for other vacuum leaks and get the timing set (if it idles, shouldn't be a problem)?

other areas to check is the smog pump and associated hoses and diverter valve and the EGR valve.

That's what I'm in the process now. I found a vacuum hose diagram for a 1987 Toyota Pickup 22R, but it says its for Cali emissions. How different would the diagram be?
