so sometimes when i'm driving if i take a turn and crank the wheel all the way it makes a loud "crack or konk" type noise, not like something is breaking but is maybe on the verge of breaking. what could be the problem?

 

Grease the steering stops, and use the search button. It happens to everyone's trucks, and we get a thread on it about once a week.

 

I had the same thing with mine while reversing and turning hard to straighten up on the street outside my garage until I realized the steering stops needed greased, the grease did the trick for me.

 

lol happens to me all the time, just grease the steering stops, its not really a big deal

I think there are supposed to be plastic caps over those stops too, but grease is cheaper.

 

Yep, and I've somehow managed to retain both of mine. They're like a nylon cap that is supposed to act as sort of a bushing, I guess, to absorb impact from the steering stop hitting the lower control arm or whatever it hits on these funky IFS systems. They are on the verge of falling off every time I get under the truck

 

Yea, if you buy new nylon caps, be sure to buy 6 sets. That will last you about a year.

I remember years back (will be 5yrs tomorrow!) that was one of the first threads I ever made on this site.

Like everybody else has said, there are nylon caps that are supposed to be on there to cover them.
They do not last long so get several sets, or just use grease.

There's even a old thread around here somewhere that a fellow was determined to stop this horrific noise forever. So, he fashioned some mod for the stops. Unfortunately, I don't remember what he did or what the title of thread was. I do remember it was pretty good idea. Kinda involved, but a good idea nonetheless.

 

I think if you were to sand them down good and spray with bedliner or rubber undercoating, you would go pretty far in making a more permanent solution.

 

Sorry to contradict, but that stuff will pull/tear/rub right off.

 

Yeah I found some tubing that would fit snug over the nubs then filled the tube that stuck out past the nub with silicon and grease

 

Oh, it's okay. After thinking about it, you're right. It'll wear through once you hit steering lock a few times.

 

how about bolt a low-pro compression bushing on the knuckle?

 

I shot mine with lithium grease about two weeks ago...still working.
