T-case Regear
I was reading a lot of post on the t-case regearing. There seems to be a mixed opinion on what it is good for. I like to crawl and climb but I also encounter a lot of mud on the trails. Wheel speed seems to be the point of contention with lower t-case gears.
MY Question is, Right now 3rd-5th are useless in 4l, they never get used so there is a lost potential for range. If I re-gear the t-case, would these gears not replace 1st and 2nd+, and 1st and 2nd would just be lower? If I needed more wheel speed could I not just leave in 4L 3rd with the new gears and it would be the same as 1st was with stock gears? Let me know if I am missing something. Thanks.

Not quite sure what your question is.
But, if I'm reading it right, you never use 3-5 now. So, second gear is about as fast as you need to go in 4L.
In that case, yes, you can regear to a 4.7 case, and for speed stuff, use 3, 4, or 5 even.
I ran a single 4.7 case for almost 2 years. It was awesome for going slow, but out here, we have trails with obstacles, then long stretches of nearly 2wd smooth dirt. On those stretches, i could do 25-30 mph, in 5th, at 4k on the tach.
So, yes, you could regear, and have 3rd as your wheel speed gear, and have the slower gears be 1 and 2.
Or, just double it up, and get a 4 speed transfer case and have it all.

I did, but shifting the transfercase requires a stop.
When you have a 1/4 mile of fast stuff, then a bumpy section that requires 4 low, then fast again, then bumps, then fast then obstacle, it gets really annoying to have to stop, shift into 4 high, stop, shift into low, stop, shift into high, etc...
Now, i can just run my stock case on all but the roughest stuff, then stop and shift for the obstacles.

A dual case setup would be sweet but my t-case is leaking so I was goin to tear it down and regear while I am in there. 4H is fine for most stuff, in fact 2h is fine for most stuff, I really like the fact I can use 3-5 in 4l with new gears so for now that will have to do. I'll dual stick the trail rig when it gets going.

Ike do you think the 4.0 set from nwor is a better option than 4.7, From your experience would this give you a little more top end but still have some awsome crawling?

I see in your sig you have a 3.0, this would mean you also have the chain driven transfer case unless you have swapped it out for a tcase out of a 22re truck? If this is the case, you can not get gears for your transfer case. You have a few options, none of which are cheap. You could find a used gear driven transfer case, then order the 4.7 gears and adapter plates and 23 spline shaft from Marlin. Or you could get one of their V6 crawl boxes, that bolts between your current transmission and transfer case. If you go with a dual case setup, you will need to fab or buy a new rear cross member, and you will have to get your drive shafts retubed or replaced.

Like I said, you could get their adapters, and pick up a used case. That would be the cheaper option, maybe around $100? I haven't added up all the parts in awhile. You do loose the shift on the fly option with the gear driven case though.

well 100 or 150 is not that bad. Is that the price of a 22re t-case? I have access to 22re parts truck but It's not mine and we would rather leave it in one piece for the time being.

I'm not sure how that works.
I was under the impression that the 5speeds were the same between the 22re and the 3.0. Etype may have a better answer there.
If so, you should only be paying 100-150 bucks for a used transfercase if you don't get it from your buddies truck.

He would need the gear case, and the adapter plate which is $350. Also need the 23 spline 4.7 gear kit which is $400, for a total of $750 minus the transfer case. They do sell a fresh built transfercase complete with 4.7 gears and the adapter plate for $1175 if you do not feel comfortable grinding out the case and rebuilding it your self.

Marlin has a lot of info on their website, I've looked into gearing way to many times.... One of these days I might drop the money on a dual tcase setup.

If I could get a good look at the adaptor plate I could make one, the t-case might have to be poached from the other truck but it is an option. Man I am still pissed, you want a little more power(3.0 vs 22re) and look at the headaches.
