So I've got an '88 4Runner with a 22RE. I'm building a new one right now, and I'm about 2 weeks or so out from the swap.
The engine in it has a mess of problems. Rod noise, head gasket leak (coolant to outside block), timing chain noise, and now, low oil pressure.
When I start the truck, the oil light stays on for about 3 seconds, and also during that 3 seconds the timing chain rattles like its dry.
Any quick fixes to help me build oil pressure faster? Just need something temp so I can drive the thing without worry for the next couple weeks. Thanks.

 

Get some oil stabilizer. The Lucas oil stuff works good.

If your just patching it for a few weeks, you could try lucas or one of those additives. But after you get it the new engine i would stick with a good quality oil that does not need any additives to make the oil better. Spend your additive money on good oil to start with. Low oil pressure isnt always as bad as you think as long as it it flowing,high oil pressure can keep the oil from geting in to small tight places the engine needs it. Rod noise is usually in the rod bearing. The rod bearings are what give you oil pressure. When they go, so does the pressure. Good luck keeping it running.

 

sounds like a dry start!.. when you take your oil filter off does oil spill everywhere?. cause it should, if it doesn't that means its empty and has to fill up with oil before the oil can get anywhere else..

... or you're way overdue for an oil change ...

do an oil change and use straight 50w oil. it's warm enough lately to get away with that.

I've got lot's of time on my hands lately.

 

Just changed the oil, no coolant in oil, no oil in coolant
Running 30W right now.
Oil pump is new, replaced when I bought the truck

 

Added a quart of Lucas Oil Stabilizer last night
Timing chain seemed to make less noise during normal driving conditions
The real test will be to see if it dry starts when I leave for work this morning...

 

this stuff will give you a good month or so, so use this and change that badboy soooooon....
