waterlogged starter?

well i finally got my 1990 yota truck fixed and it drives smooth as silk now. I went muddin yesterday and got my front tires stuck down in a mudhole that was really thick clay stuff. man that sucker was nasty. but now to the point, i heard that the starter is in a bad spot on these trucks and i think its got alot of mud and water buildup but i'm not sure cuz i havent had time to check it. has anyone else had this problem? my battery is fine but when i turn the key it just clicks. after about 30 tries it cranks right up but has the same problem the next time ya crank it. is there a way to prevent this from happening? like some sort of modification i could do in order to prevent it? any help would be greatly appreciated. THANKS!!

I would take a look at the contacts and see if they are caked with mud, possibly take the starter out and test it.

Check the battery connections first.

I replaced my starter this past weekend and got the same click with the new one.

My brother came over and took apart the battery terminals and had it running in 5 minutes.

the old pickups are bad about that. when you go through water the points get corroded. get a piece of rebar or something metal and hit the starter about three times and i can almost gurrantee it will start.
