is your check engine light on?
you said 22r, not 22re so timing, vacuum leaks, ignitor, caburetor, air-injection system.

it was a vac leak.

i un hooked the hose that goes to a valve that controls this 3/4in hose that has vac that goes to the air cleaner and it stopped backfiring and running as rich so im assuming there is a vac leak somewhere and this is a temp fix till i find it. any ideas?

grab a can of wd-40 or similar and spray in short bursts on the hoses when the engine is running. the engine speed should fluctuate when you spray near a leak.

you mentioned the diverter valve- it has the vac hose and 3/4 hose that goes to the filter... it's possible that it is malfunctioning or the vacuum switch that controls it is. air-pumps / air-injection systems are notorious for causing backfiring when they malfunction.

also, isn't there a dashpot on the carburetor that keeps the throttle from quickly slamming shut when you let off the throttle? I believe part of it's function was to prevent backfiring.

bumping for results:
my 90 22R is doing the same thing and I'd hate to burn up the valves since I just got the truck.

That could be true for mainland U.S.. I'm not sure about Toyotas but I know that here in Hawaii, Suzukis and Hondas came straight from Japan market. That may be true for Toyotas too. I know once I contacted Suzuki MotorCorp for a paint code for my bike and was referred to their offices in Japan.

I guess it's cheaper to ship from Japan than it is from mainland U.S.

if it is carb'd, find a diagram for a late 80's carb'd truck with the air pump. there is basically a diverter valve that either puts the air from the pump into the intake or exhaust depending on engine vacuum.
