Pickup VS 4Runner

I am trying to decide between a Toyota Pickup (xtra cab) or a 4Runner..... (1985 or below)

Can the back part of a 4runner come off so that it is more like a truck?

Are there any big differences (performance wise) between the 4runners and Pickups?

Any information on this topic will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

EDIT: Also, do all of the modifications that I would normally use on a Pickup (suspension, 63" chevy springs, ect...) work on a 4runner?

Get a 85 SR5 So you have SFA and EFI

Yes

None

I really would love to have a 4runner for more room, But the truck also has it's advantages like the bed when you need to haul stuff.

if you are tall either is a better choice then a standard cab I like my 4runner better for daily driving but I really like the short wheel base on my pick up for off roading

well it really depends on what you plan on doing with it. I had an 85 4x4 p.u. and loved the thing. I would still have it if it was for being a suburbans breakfast. 1st gen 4runners the back comes off. As far as performance goes the 4runner is a bit slower due to the extra weight. But I have to say, i think the performance was way better in my 85 than in my 91 4runner. If I wasn't planning on having a family soon and so involved with the youth group in my church, i probably would have gotten another p.u. BUT I do love how comfortable my runner is. More room to stretch out. The 22R motor is bulletproof, coupled w/ 5speed manual tranny is a combo that will last a long time. The automatic is a pain to try to do any work around.
Sorry for rambling. ADD in full effect.

If you've got more than one passenger, get a 4runner, no more than one a pickup is fine. I sold my old 87 carbed p/u to get an 85 4runner with SFA and EFI (doesn't have to be SR5 for both, but SR5's are nicer). Personally, I like both, and wish I could have both, so if your like me get the runner because you kind of have the best of both worlds.

What is the average mileage for lifted trucks and then for lifted 4runners?

Should I get a v4? v6? v8?

I dont want to have horrible gas mileage........

I own both and they are certainly different. The runner has the shorter wheelbase and the ride is much nicer. The truck is lighter and engine feels it, but the runner is more sure footed offroad. I am going to SAS and pop top a runner for a trail rig in the future but the pick is just soo F#@^%*( handy to have. I no that doen't help much but it's my experience

my solution before I got the pickup was I have a 4x8 trailer it is a bit long but is has seen places far from pavement.

and with my flat bed I cannot carry much so I still use the trailer often.

My 85 has a 95 22re in it (4cylinder fuel injected) and the chassis has 285,000 on it and the engine I have no idea. Try and find one that has a STOCK engine because I'm trying to run out the bugs in my EFI system because they chopped into the wiring harness and jerry rigged the whole d---
thing in there. Very frustrating but if you get something stock I would think it would be fine. Definitely expect to replace things when you get it, most people don't take care of these things in the first place and usually sell them when they start having problems (atleast that's what I have run into so far)
