hey i was wondering what you guys thought about making your own cross over steering, ive been blessed with getting an 85 pickup with 33s and no power steering and i have no money but alot of metal and spare parts laying around so my question is what if you were to take your arms off your knuckles flip them over and put them on the other side then cut out a peice of 12 gage metal with a hole in the middle and welded it on for your second bracket, for the pitman arm bar to bolt on for the steering, then take a peice of pipe or tubing and get some tie rod ends and put a large nut on the end tak it to the tie rod then weld the nut to the pipe for the pitman arm/ to steering arm, then repeat for the track bar then just fab up the mounting plate for the ifs steering box? and ideas? or waste of time?

 

Will need a fair amount of fabricating and welding skill to pull it off safely. I used to run a fabricated double steering arm/crossover setup from AllPro Offroad, pictured below:

 

Yes, it HAS been done? Is it safe? probably not.......


Save up for the Hysteer kit and do it right and safe....

can it be done? yes. but at the same time i can run down the freeway naked banging pots and pans together..... doesnt mean its safe for me or those around me nor should i do it

 

Chris, you certainly have a way with descriptive imagery in your posts...

 

Try building your own cross over steering now and NOT think of a 240lb hairy fat kid running down the interstate with i big ol 2qt pot and a frying pan.......

 

that is just so true and great.

 

i don't think crossover will change the mechanical advantage to make your manual steering any better. i believe the main advantage (could be wrong, i'm new to toyota's and the push/pull system) is that it won't bind or turn during flex. the hi-steer mod you are speeking is of course to keep rocks away from your tie-rod as well. the mechanical advantage would be most changed by changing your pitman arm length (shortening) but then you'd loose turning radius.

if you have fabricating skills, surely you have enough skills to go to a junk yard and pull the power steering off another truck. parts yards are cheap, and i'm sure it would take much less time than fabricating a backyard steering system.

yea its just i cant seem to find any power steering boxs(pumps lines and brackets) for an 85 or older or else i would but i can find the ifs boxs and setups all day long thats why i was considering making the crossovers steering or hi steer

 

With the low prices of crossover steering from Marlin, TG, Sky, All-Pro, I'd save some $$$ and just buy a tried and true steering solution from a vendor.

If your dead set on a push-pull power steering box, I've got my old one I could sell for cheap I bet quite a few people around here have their leftover stock boxes laying around the garage also.
