Last night on my way home my truck started clunking! My stepdad and I lifted the rearend and started it up to find the noise. It came from the rear diff. Im far from a hardcore mechanic, but I can follow directions if they are good and detailed. I have not torn into the diff yet because I dont know the steps on inspecting it. Can you guys give me a hand with solving my problem? Do I need calipers,feeler guages,and precision measuring tools? Or specific tools? Is there a recomended place to get R&P gears for a good price and good quality? Please Help!

And if they are stock, it is probably easier and less expensive to swap out a 3rd member from a junkyard.

yup i put a welded one in my trail rig... never really worked on cars before i did my clutch, rear diff and all this other stuff im doing..

just have metric wrenchs and sockets and a breaker bar my drive shaft was welded on almost!

 

don't forget that if it's a 4wd and you plan on using it, swap both front and back if you change ratios

 

yeah Ive already had a shop change my ratio to 4.88 about 9 years ago. So they are not stock.

 

You may be able to find used stock 4.88 thirds out of 2nd gen 4Runners. If you look at the label on the door jamb the diff code is G144 I believe.

 

If you don't have the tool needed to set the carrier bearing pre-load, then go with either a junkyard replacement or pay some one who does.

 

While the task is not really that hard, it is very technically demanding, and if you don't get it right, you'll likely trash all the parts you just replaced.

I'd suggest getting a whole unit and replace it, or pay someone to do the repair.

Yes, you need precision tools. Yes, it is extremely helpful to have someone mentor you as you do it. Yes, you can do it, with patience, and have a good mechanic double check your pattern before you put it in.
