Picked up a 90 4runner 3vze with 200k on it for 1500. Drove it about 2 weeks, ran great mileage sucked.
Heard a "slapping noise" like the fan was wacking something, and I didn't see anything.
Drove it two miles to home the noise got worse.
I popped open the hood just in time to see the engine shudder and stall with smoke coming from the fan belt.
The pully attached to
the fan is frozen and I got a sick feeling the timing belt broke. I'm not much of a wrencher and my question is this:

does anyone know if the 3zve is interefence or non?

i done the same thing and put a timing KIT in it and alls great now

 

To answer your question, the 3vze is a non interference engine.

It isnt your tbelt that broke. Your engine fan bracket that your fan bolts to and your alt and p/s belts ride on froze. Its a common problem for the bearings in those to freeze up then the motor keeps turning the belts and burns them off. Replace the bracket and those 2 belts and you should be good as new. From the dealer its expensive since it comes with the bracket, fan clutch and pulleys. About $500-$600 usually

 

PM dirtoyboy...maybe he has one on the cheap... I had this happen a few years back and had to buy from the stealer(most bone yards wont take parts from a motor, they sell them whole...at least up here any way).... It really sux that the stealer charges $600 for something just because they can... bet it costs no more than $20 to make the part

 

The fan moves freely, but the pully driven by the fanbelt is froze. Would burnt out bearings cause this?

How hard is it to install a new fan bracket, and should I just replace the water pump and timing belt at the same time?

The fan moves freely because it has a fluid clutch driving it, there is no mechanical connection between the fan and pulley. Yes seized bearings will cause this. The fan bracket is a piece of cake to install, just unbolt the entire bracket and out the new one on. No need to replace the timing belt, unless of course it's due. But you might want to replace the alternator and power steering belts while they're off.

I was totally bummed thinking the Tbelt had broke and me little 2k investment was shot.

i would do a t belt while in there if it is due but if you do don't forget do a water pump a t belt and pump only takes like 5 hours max it sucks having to pull it apart twice

 

I would stay away from that $99 pot-metal bracket. You think you have problems now, wait until that bracket explodes from low quality junk and takes out your fan, radiator, hood, and more. I have seen it happen time and again with that aftermarket stuff.

 

tbelts dont take 5 hours. Flat rate is only3.5-4 hours. They can be done in 1-2 hours easy

 

By you and I who've done a ton of 'em. First timers usually take 4-5 hours. I can do it in ~2 hrs w/experience and the right tools... and if nothing breaks .

Also, get the Toyota belt. It's got timing marks right on it! Absolutely fool-proof. Line up Cam-Cam-Crank, release tensioner, bingo.

 

I ended up getting that bracket from NAPA for $120 with a lifetime warranty.

Good to see you got yours home when it broke. Mine ended up letting go on the trail and I had to get it towed home.

Definitly do the T-belt when you are in there. When the bracket went bad pieces of the bearing went everywhere including in the timing cover etc.

I have done mine a couple times, and every time I do, I have to go back in and do it right, a cam always jumps a tooth or 2...I usually get it right the second time tho(and still in 3 hrs or less)..If its your first time, plan on 6 hrs, and if you get done early the wife thinks you are a hero.
