Engine cold, temp gauge shows overheating

When I turn my truck on (v6 3zve) the temp gauge immediately jumps to the red position of the gauge. I figure it has to be some kind of bad signal coming from the sender or the way the gauge is reading it.

Does anyone have any ideas? Most of the threads I see have to do with actual overheating problems or trucks reading cold all the time. If the temp sender is bad would it read always hot or always cold?

Three areas i would check out

1. Is the senor good
2. Is the gauge working correctly
3. Isolate the temp sending unit wire and see whether or not it is grounding out.

Number 3 i have seen happen a couple times--except it was a jeep
