Probably will do little as the ECU and O2 sensor will bump the fuel back up to keep the air/fuel ratio in the correct range while running, at least in closed loop mode. And with the engine mods you describe, that may throw things off enough in open loop mode (like when the gas pedal is floored) to cause pinging or worse.

Two things that can help drive a little easier are a vacuum gauge and/or an air/fuel meter:

I find the A/F meter is handy in order to keep the engine in the optimum operating range (i.e closed loop). Also having the proper gearing for the tire size is a big help. And with the aerodynamics (or lack thereof) of the 4Runner body, keep the speed down. I get at least 10% better MPG at 55 than I do at 65.

You are pretty much beat with these engines. What you are getting is the best you will get. Going slower makes the biggest difference. Bumming around town is killer.

Buy an Echo............

If you buy an echo you can play more as you will have more money to spend on fuel for the weekends. Only thing is the initial cost of the extra vehicle. I'm spending my money on making my motor as effcient as possible. I figure if I spend $1000 on stuff to make my motor get a good and steady 33mpg highway its better than spending $5000 on a small car. $4000 buys alot of fuel.
