V6 front calipers on 83 solid axle

i have some spair V6 front calipers on laying around. i was wondering if they provide more breaking power than the ifs 4cyl brake calipers i have on my front axle which is an 83 solid axle.

also would they bolt right onto the solid axle. and my axle also has the ladcruiser rotors.

I have a set of 4cyl IFS calipers and my red truck has a 3.0 V6. I can not for the life of me tell a difference in them, they even have the same numbers cast into them.

My guess is that they are the same. Anyone? I have both. Show me where to look.

I know they use different pads. My truck was a factory v6 and the previous owner swapped a 22RE into it when the 3.0 took a dump. Anyway, I went to the parts store to get front pads for it and without thinking I said they were for a 4 cylinder. So I got it all apart and the pads didn't fit my calipers. I had forgot that my truck has v6 running gear. Once I got the v6 pads they fit.

The V6 calipers have the 4 large pistons in them and have large ribs on the outside of the caliper. The regular 4 cyl calipers have 2 large and 2 small pistons. I also know that I can't run my 3.75" BS wheels on my 81/83 front axle without a spacer either. I have them on my SAS 87 and SAS 94 trucks.

those calipers will bolt on. buy some pads for a v6, like the guys just said.
buy a pair of fj 80 rotors, and it will be better than ever.

I didn't know that FJ80 rotors would work, when I put ifs calipers on my old solid front axle I used vented FJ60 rotors (I ordered rotors for an 83 FJ60 but I don't think it matters. I would be willing to bet FJ60 rotors would be cheaper

I did this and it make a huge difference. I also kinda rednecked it. I ground the fins off, repainted them black and running a 1/8" spacer on the fronts so i can keep my 4" backspaced cragar soft 8's.

V6 calipers. V6 Pads. FJ60 Rotors. Wheel Spacers. 2 Hours of your time on a Saturday. that's all you need to do this swap.

If you really wanna increase your braking also upgrade to a V6 master cylinder. Especially if you use V6 calipers. Huge difference in breaking.

The ideal parts list is getting rotors off of like an 82' ish Cruiser, I don't think model plays a role, but it may. Have the parts guy pull the proper rotors for the 82' pickup and the rotors for the cruiser and just compare. The cruiser rotors will be wider, hence the need for new calipers.

Get the rotors
You'll need calipers off of an IFS Toyota PU, or V6 calipers
if you go with the V6 calipers I recommend changing to the V6 master cylinder as well. You may have longer pedal travel with V6 calipers and stock M/C
You'll also need to cut back the dust shield to get the calipers on.

I didnt have to cut the dust shield.? I have an 84 axle with 91 v6 calipers with the bigger vented rotors. Calipers bolted right on.

Hmm, I've heard from some people that they've had to cut the dust shield. I have just the IFS 4cyl calipers on mine. Looking at the V6 caliper though it looks like I might have to cut some of my dust shield. May not though, just something to consider, but would be easy to cut.

I have an '83 and with calipers for a '90 v6 Runner, I would've had to trim the backing plate if I'd ran it. At the parts store I asked for '83 FJ60 rotors and calipers/pads for '90 v6 4Runner, and I'm running 1.5" spacers so I could run the 4.5" backspaced steelies I already had my km2's mounted on.

Also, it's FJ60 rotors...60! Not FJ80, but FJ60.

hahaha 2 hours... only if your pro and you have a press in your shop. it took me like 5 days, given i was sick when i did it and i had to run around a lot, go to my uncles to use his press, go on part runs, stuff like that.
i had to cut my dust shield, i cut it down to a little ring though cause i didn't like snow getting stuck in there and making it so i had no brakes.
