So with all the recent flooding, I decided to take the 94 Truck out to the farm and mud a little. Well I got down towards the river, and got impossibly stuck in sediment that had washed up. So I put it in L4 and got out fine. So I was going along and got stuck again, so I got out to asses the situation. Unbeknownce to me, someone kicked it out of 4WD all together. So I sat there and rocked the clutch for a good 20 minutes until I realized it was out. I corrected the situation, and got out fine.
My question is, did I do permanent damage to the clutch or 4WD components by leaving the axles locked in and riding the clutch so hard trying to get out?

 

I don't think so. Your saying the t-case was in 2wd and the axles were locked right? The only thing that means is that the front diff spins and you can drive like that if you want...that way if you want to put it in 4wd you can.

 

Its fine to drive with the hubs locked and the T-case not engaged as long as your not going to fast. Did you smell any sick like burning smell while trying to get unstuck?

 

Ok, well there was a little smell, but it wasn't very pungent, and it was only for a brief moment. Drove it home 30 minutes away and no troubles. Learned my lesson though, always check the 4WD light. My rear differential was buried in sand. Thank god for bulldozers.
I kept it under 5 mph, seeing as I was stuck. haha.

An off question, what is the use of the neutral selection on the transfer case? What would I need it for?

 

That's a good question. The only thing I can think N for the Tcase would be needed for would be being towed. Anyone else?

 

The neutral mode, also known as a "neutral tow" feature, allows four-wheel drive vehicles to be towed behind another vehicle like a motor home. Its there so you can shift the transfer case motor to a neutral position during towing, preventing transfer case damage. So pretty much towing with all 4 wheels on the ground. And as for the smell, you mighta burnt your clutch a bit but it sounds ok to me, ive seen some pretty bad clutch burns happen without emediate damage to the truck, just shortens the life of your clutch a bit.

lol, on my brothers 1994 22re 4x4 extended cab and if your facing uphill you have to use the clutch a lot to get going...it's crazy...then you start smelling it...lol

dude i used to just beat my truck like that all the time, went thro a few clutches but it was ok, and i almost never unlocked my hubs unless i was driving out of town cuz i would hate getting out in the mud to lock them in
