Just got it today, so I think I got to introduce myself a little bit. I'm more on the PU forum and a regular on IH8MUD since I also own a '97 FZJ80 and a '91 PU.

This is my new acquisition, an '85 4Runner 22RE, 150K on the odo with rough body but strong engine and no major rust. Slight frontend damage and the right hub won't turn to lock position(??), the left side is fine though.

Got it today for $900 after wheeling and dealing with the seller, who asked $1295 for it, with a long list to fix.

Sweet deal man. I paid 800 for my 86, and yours is in much better condition plus its an 85. Good work!

Good lookin runner and a steal for $900 you will have a lot of jealous people on this site. Many people feel 85 was the best year straight front axle and EFI.
As you can see from my sig i think you chose well! No clue on the hub I would pull it and take a look.

Hubs are waaaay easy to take apart! All you're gunna need to do is undo the bolts and when you take it apart you'll easily figure out how it works. You're just gunna wanna clean any rust or grime off and then regrease it, BUT go EASY on the grease or the suction will make it impossible to unlock/lock. And you may wanna pick up a diy gasket sheet to make a new gasket to keep the elements out more...

looks similar to what i just bought a couple weeks ago, black '85. i'm in the same boat, trying to learn as much as i can about these old gems while daily driving a newer yota. i think our paths may cross on threads in the future, we're probably going to have similar questions so i'll be seeing you around. great score by the way, i thought I got a good deal on mine until i read this!

Mine is originally white (not really white, looks like Ivory or something in that nature) but it's been repainted black at some point. Now the paint on the hood is peeling off badly. I'm going to black it out with some decal. Got the idea from some fellow Cruiserheads!

One thing, and only, that I do not feel comfortable with this truck is it's an automatic! Now I'm doing the research about swapping a 5-spd W56 on. It should keep me busy for a while!

 

Congrats on your purchase. An '85 with SFA\EFI at the price you got it at is a nice find. Hopefully, your's isn't as rusty as the ones I find here in Iowa are.
My green 4runner is also an auto and it sure sucks the power. I like auto's for both street and trail but it needs good gearing. I ended up with 36" TSL\SX's and 5.29's but it's too tall (gearing wise). 35's or maybe a large 34 would be about perfect.

Where are you located at, if you swap in a MT, I might be interested in your AT as spare.

 

look in my signature and click on "1985 Toyota 4runner 22RE 5-speed - resto-mod to follow.", that should bring up the pics of my baby. i bought some used but 98% rust free fenders and a tailgate for it since those pics. i'm in the process of refinishing them, just waiting on some POR15 and the weekend and i'll have at it!

 

Thanks. Yeah, it's 99% rust free since it's been a Florida truck for the whole life. The original owner's manual is still in the front passenger compartment!

I'm planing on putting 35's on it along with 4.88 and winch and eventually the MK dual TCases. I want it to be my trail rig but as of now, I have to convince my financial minister to keep it as my 3rd vehicle!

If anyone has good, successful excuses in telling your behalf and wants to pass them along, let me know.
