Need help with my yota!

First off i just need to say this forum is great and ive already learned so much. I recently purchased this yota as my first designated work truck and have come to find im in over my head. I am hoping some of you guys can help me with this project and keep me on track. I am working on replacing my clutch and swapping in a 5 speed on my 80 4wd pickup and have run into some problems. I would really appreciate any help you guys could offer. Here is where im at.

I am almost ready to drop the tranny but i cant figure out how to remove the 4 speed shifter?

Welcome to YT!

The pic of the wires did not work...try again.

As for the bolts, when I removed my rear drive shaft, I had the use a box end wrench. The key is to heat 'er up real good. I heated the nut til she was cherry (I used a oxy-propane torch). Once it gets this hot, the nuts come off as if they were a day old.

for some reason those plugs are a bitch to get out....luckily i didnt have to deal with them...they got ripped off when my front u-joint gave out and sheared my driveshaft in half (see thread Screwed and Tattooed)...i never had a problem with my bolts...had my front shaft off twice...are you sure its the right size socket...those should be a 12mm....if i remember right...nothing else will work but that size...if the bolts are really tight...get a breakover bar...but dont just smooth the bolt head off...looks like u need to clean your undercarriage just like i need to...damn 1st gens...always seem to pick up every bit of mud i go through...lol..im sure my swampers have somethin to do with that

jason191918- The wires are actually in the pic in the top middle part there is one black wire and one red wire going into the 4wd indicator. Thanks for the heads up on the heat torch! Can i pick one of those up at harbor freight?

I remember that thread....ouch....

I believe the problem is the a socket/ratchet handle is too tall (at least on my truck), and that that breaking the bolt will happen before round off.

I added my last post at the same time and never even noticed this one. Now I see it. As far as the torch, you can get it anywhere. There are many options....propane, MAPP, oxy-propane, oxy-MAPP, oxy-acetylene, etc. I used oxy-propane, because that is what my dad gave me. Any heat is better than none. In order to have this really work for you, you will want to get it cherry, so I recommend one of the oxygen torches. Good luck.

A good 6pt socket and a 6pt box wrench have always gotten mine off. For extra measure, soak them overnite with WD40 or PB Blaster.

If you removed the bolts, then the flanges are rusted together. Just yank hard or use a BFH

Yes, the whole front dash is yellow with a black dash pad. So you think its rusted together on the rear shaft? Whats a BFH?

smack your driveline a couple times with a big hammer man. The 2 bolts each side of the shifter to remove it. i think there 14's not sure remember how the bushings go. not sure on the wire, if you absolutely have to cut and splice it with a butt connector.

Yes... It wont idle anything below 800, so i have it like 950 and it smooths out. Might have something to do with the high comp of the engine too. block and head were both milled and i have 9.9:1 pistons in it. Very poppy and loud

right there on the end of that shaft that comes out of the tranny...theres a big set screw there...take it out...then take the 2 bolts off of the tranny holding the shifter in place...that'll get that out...yes..the driveshaft flanges are probably rusted together..mine were...a BFH will become one of your best friends on this truck...and YES remember how the bushings go...i dont..and i lost the bushings...which is why i need pics of the bolts...please and thank you!!!! good luck with your project!

Is there a certain spot i should smack the driveshaft, i dont want to break it?

Should i just use my framing hammer or a rubber mallet?

I'd start with a good size rubber mallet or a deadblow if you have one, they are really nice.

Don't know if the 4sp shifter comes out the same as the 5sp shifter on my '83, but from your pic it looks similar. If so, you don't remove any bolts to get the shifter out, right at the base of the shifter there from inside the truck you push down on that cup bracket and turn it counter clockwise and the shifter just lifts right out. It is spring loaded, so push the cup down while turning.
