Has anyone ever had any problems with the bed hitting the cab while off roading? I need to know either way a yes or no answer will work no explination needed if you don't feel like it.

98 Tacoma LTD TRD: Nope, never. And I thrashed it.

 

YES It happened when I went wheeling once and it chipped the paint on the back of the cab on both sides. I went and bought some touch up paint to keep the crack from spreading. I've been thinking of getting some neoprene to glue to the cab where it hit before. Just a small square to keep it from cracking the paint again, but I havn't gotten around to doing it and so far I havn't noticed any further damage.

 

With the limited amount of trail running I've done, no. But my bed is crooked. anybody know a way to fix that besides goin' to the body shop?

 

There should be 6 or so mounting bolts underneath the truck. You can loosen them and move the bed till its straight. We used to do it all the time to Ford's at Rhino Linings because we took the bed bolts off, then sprayed the bed. Sometimes, the bed would shift on us.

 

Thanks for the replies guys. The reason I need to know is because last year I was rear ended and the repairs to the cab are now failing and they said it was due to off-road use which may have caused the bed to hit the cab and they are trying not to warranty the repairs.

Was that after "extreme" or normal off road condtions?

It was pretty light offroading. I've never really gone Xtreme
I don't know exactly what obsticle caused the bed to hit the cab because I didn't notice it when I was on the trail, I noticed it when I was washing my truck.

 

But if you mean "normal" by say graded roads or maybe two track trails then no. This happened I'm pretty sure while crossing a small water drainage ditch on the side of a graded dirt road into a camping area in the mountains. What I believe happened was when my rear wheels went down into the ditch it pushed the bed forward since the front of my vehicle was higher. This is what I THINK happened as I said before I didn't notice anything until I got home. The damage was minimal though, two very small dents and some cracked paint no bigger than a dime where the corners of the bed hit the right and left side of the cab. I can take some pictures and upload them later tonight if you want to see the damage for comparison's sake. Otherwise I can pretend it never happened for the sake of your argument if you'd like.

Your story is interesting because of what <96> says above, because I noticed in your sig, you have a rhino liner. I wonder if the shop that worked on your truck re-aligned your bed and got it closer to the cab than normal?

Also, <96>- did you have a spray-liner put in yours or was it untouched?

I am just bring this up to see if Greg can get a better feel for what other factors may contibute to your bed rubbing...

 

No no, let me clarify. The external bed bolts on Fords are what we would remove. My point was only that the bed can be moved. On the Tacoma, those same bolts are under the bed, and have to be loosened to get the bed to move.

I did it once on my Mazda. Took off the whole bed myself.

Yup. The frame flexes too much.

Solution = rock sliders.

They had to take the bed of to make the original repairs so I think they put it on wrong. The original damage was caused by a guy hitting me doing 35 and I was stopped he didn't even touch his brakes so it is hard for me to beleive that off roading

Its an extremely common problem with Tacomas. I know very single person I know personally with a Tacoma that uses it offroad has cab/bed damage from them hitting. Toyota won't hlp you at all so don't even try.

Mind you, my definition of offroading may be different then somebody elses.
