Remove the ashtray.
The metalish sliding mount will be left. This is connected to the dash via 2(or 3, cant remember) screws that are annoying to take out. You need to crouch and contort to see them. Once out, the guide will side out and you will see the light connected to the guide.

Remove and replace ashtray light bulb

First it is a #74 bulb Amazon has them box of 10 bulbs. Enough to do the complete dash board lights. I have a Base 2000 4Runner, it is wired for and had the burnt out bulb. I used long needle nose pliers, the bulb pulled straight out, no twisting or pushing in. Just grip the bulb gently with the needle nose pliers so it doesn’t slide off the bulb as you pull straight out. Put new bulb in push straight in. You can feel when it’s seated in correct. Again no twist or turn needed. The ignition does have to be on and lights switch on for the bulb to come on. It’s designed specifically for nighttime use. Simple Toyota set up. I hope this helped someone out there.
