33" Swamper SSR or 35" Toyo Open Country?

I tried asking my wife but she just looked at me and laughed... well, actually, she likes the SSR's because they look "tougher".

I ordered 5 of the 33x12.5x16 SSR's back in December and they are still not in yet. Called them today and the guys said that they could still be anywhere from 1-6 weeks away! (We seem to have a problem up here in Canada getting tires from Interco).

I can get 315/75R16 Toyo Open Country's for the same price and I'm pretty sure they will fit with some trimming (which I don't mind doing)... they can get these in about 3 days.

Here's my problem:
I do like the SSR's but am getting pretty anxious to get new tires on my 4Runner, however, I wouldn't mind going to a 35" tire either as that was my original goal, 35" SSR's will be out of my price range.

We do see more mud up here where I'm at more than anything, so a good mud tire would be key.

Recommendations? I'm sure you guys know what they look like already, but here are some pics to put it into perspective:

SSR

Toyo

read up on what you'll need to clear 315's. unless youre planning on regearing, 315's will make your runner a dog, and kill most of its driveability. stick with a 285 if youre staying with your stock 4.30's. BTDT.

SSR's are nice. they're soft so they'll wear faster. excellent off road, but not so great in sidewall protection. they're heavy ass bitches too...but then again so are the toyos. if you dont mind having to replace tires sooner, get the swampers. if the runner is your DD/WW, then get the toyos. its the better trade-off of the two...

I think my truck has stock 4.56 gears, it came with a tow package or something like that. Anyway, from the code on the side of the door, that's what I get. I think it should be more than fine when it's in L4 anyway, which is what's important .

As for DD, this is not my daily driver, it is a second vehicle so I will need it once in a while, but not much at all. I think the SSR's I was looking at is a 10 ply, plus, I'm not going to be doing any extreme rock crawling so the sidewalls don't worry me too much.

Thanks for the input d0ubledown - still undecideded though

What kinds of speed? Big chunks? Just from driving on pavement? I've heard that they tear up on occassion during extreme off road use... can anyone confirm this?

what exactly do you mean by chunk at speed?

I have gone 70mph on the 35" SSR and it rides fine. Yes the ssr's are pretty soft and wear fast. but SSR's are pretty badass.

I didn't have any problem in BC getting the ssr's from the warehouse in Lousiana, US. I think. I got them in 2.5 weeks.

the off-road performance is going to be MUCH!!! MUCH!!! greater with the SSR's than it would be with the Toyo's...just wait for the SSR's..it'll be worth the wait..

Yeah, that's where they're supposed to be coming from - the trailer needs at least another 1500lbs before it will ship. You got some pretty skinny SSR's there, any problems with rubbing? Do you have a suspension lift on that?

of course, I did some trimming in the front, most on the inner fender wall. nah, it is stock suspension. I would like to get suspension lift just becuase I want better ride quailty. my tires doesnt look skinny to me. It look perfectly on the 4runner. check out the pics on the "bushwacker installed pics" thread on 3rd gen section. to be honest with you I think you would have problem rubbing with the 33x12.5 since mine is 10.5. it did rubbing.

crap - now I want 35 SSR's. I wonder how much trimming I will have to do to fit the 35x12.5... this sucks - never thought picking tires would be this hard.

with the 35x12.5 you will rubs on the frame at full turn. im running on 1.5" wheel spacers and the tire barely touch on the frame at full turn. it was rubbing on the frame without wheel spacers, not even full turn. it was bad. remember i have stock 16" OEM wheels on 35's. i didn't want to get aftermarket wheels cause i like my wheels!

my suggestion is to get 35x10.5. theres only TWO avaiable in that size is swamper bogger and SSR. I cant find other manufacturer that make 35x10.5.

Well crap - got a phone call just now, 4 of SSR's are in and ready to be slapped on my 4Runner. Just gotta wait for the 5th one. Finally, sleepless nights be gone!

Thanks for all the input guys - was ready to switch my order up to 35 SSR's and pound/trim the **** out of my 4Runner to make them fit. Now I shouldn't have to.

Will post pics soon!

I recommend the SSR's because when aired down will perform better than 35" Toyo's.
And if you are in need of ANY tire ASAP, travel down to Red Cliff and on the way through Red Cliff still on #1, on the left hand side you'll see a big Kelly's Tire store, they have anything in any size and they do geat deals even after the companies deal expires.

Is your 4Runner a 5sp? I don't think that any 3rd. gen auto 4Runners had 4.56 gears. I have a 98 Limited and only have the 4.30's. To my understanding the Limiteds had 4.10s, the trucks with factory locker had 4.30s. Also, I believe the "Tow package" just includes a hitch. Can anyone confirm any of this??

I think it's called the "big tire package", not the tow... sorry. When I check the number on the inside of my door, it's telling me it's 4.56. Here's where I checked the number out: http://www.brian894x4.com/Gearratiosanddiffs.html

Whether it's accurate or not, I don't know - I guess I should check the old fashion way but I'm pretty happy believing I got 4.56 Eventually I will check though just to confirm.

Anyone know how accurate that code is?

hmmmm. That site is contradictory to the one that I got my information from. This site is sort of confusing to read, but under the specifications the gear ratio's are listed. It looks as though 4.56s are only available in the 2.7l.

Thanks for help guys - I ended up waiting for the SSR's, which came in yesterday. Had to do quite a bit of trimming and still need to pound in the pinch weld, kinda glad I didn't go with 35's!

Here's a sneak peak, will start a seperate thread with more pictures once I get everything done:

Anyone ever find out about the stock 4.56 gears?
