Hello all,

I was putting my running boards back on today since my wife is pregnant (its hard for her to get in & out), and I noticed I had a transmission leak. It's coming from the back of the transmission close to the drive shaft. It appears to be coming from two bolts, one big and one small, on the side of the transmission. There is a small shield that is completely covered. I have 106,000 miles on it, and had my 90K service done at 86,000 miles which included a transmission service. I will try to post a pic here soon. Is this going to be a big deal?

 

Here is a pic, hopefully the link will work. I forgot to mention the specs of my truck. It's a 2001 limited 4wd, the transmission is A340F. I have read that these have problems with the planetary gear, hopefully this is not related. I do have shifting problems occasionally, especially from 3rd to 4th. There seems to be more of a pause and then a not so smooth release forward.

Ask around in your town for an old Lexus/Toyota certified guy thats started/works at a shop.

Theres one in Tulsa that great and I have him look at anything instead of the dealer and its just as good (the guy knows his stuff) as going to the dealer.

If not I'd just have a mech look at it and see what they say. I don't think this is a common Toyota problem, probably just an individual case.

Looks like it’s leaking from the transfer case fill plug. Hopefully it’s just pooling at the lower bolt and not leaking there too. Was a transfer case flush and fill part of your 90k service? Maybe they didn't torque the bolt right.

27ft/lbs for both plugs, if I remember correctly.

 

I think more importantly would be: "I hope there is no ATF leaking from the transfer case fill or drain plug, considering that the transfer case on his truck should be filled with gear lube and not ATF."

It looks like gear oil in the picture but it's tough to tell...

 

True. I looked at the pic again, and it could be gear oil. Like you said, it's tough to tell from a picture. I assumed when the original poster said his transmission was leaking, he had confirmed the fluid was ATF.

 

Everyone was right, it turned out to be a leak from the transfer case. It was leaking from the drain plug, apparently something was not tightened well. Luckily it was still about half full with gear oil so no harm done. Thanks for the inputs.
