engine rebuild parts?

I am looking at rebuilding my 22re. What I want to know is what parts are absolutely mandatory, what parts are recommended, and what parts can be reused. I plan on getting the engnbldr.com rebuild kit with timing chain. Also, is blueprinting and balancing necessary in a wheeling rig with minimal daily use?

Any input you may have will be greatly appreciated.

Blueprinting and balancing isn't needed for a street/wheeling rig... I just did mine in the truck, but my crank and cylinders were in good shape. To do it right, get the block checked and see what they need to take the cylinders to, and have them check the crank so if it needs to be turned so you can get the right bearings and pistons/rings. A good machine shop will want to have the pistons/rings there so they can test fit them as well as the crank and bearings so they can get the machining right on. Might want them to take a look at the rods too to make sure they all are within spec as far as weight goes... they are weighing the ends in a little special fixture to make sure they are close to the same so you don't end up with any weird vibes, probably not a issue if you weren't having any vibes before. Once they get all the machine work done, it's a simple matter of bolting everything back together and running it. If you don't have a FSM then you might want to go find one so you have the specs on torques and such... Good luck!

I know that when choosing a head gasket the materal should be made out of a carbon materal. Let the machinist tell you what is needed. Have you done a compresion test? are the rods knocking? What is your bugget?

inexpensive but good. I don't want to sink tons of money into this, but I don't want to skimp either.
