Rear driveshaft vibration on my '96 4Runner is getting a little worse now,time to rebuild. At first it was just a small vibration , kinda about 3000 rpm-ish around 60mph + . Now when i take off , sounds like a carrior bearing rumble , plus the highway speed vibration. Kinda isolated the slop to the front double u-joints (carden joint ?) on rear driveshaft.

Where the double u-joints are, i assume there's a centering ball and spring. Is their a parts kit for that avaiable somewhere ?? Part numbers and any advise would be most welcome. Thanks

I don't really want to spend 4 bills on a new driveshaft if i don't need to.

 

I just went through the same thing.

Not trying to be a jerk or anything but just asking the obvious first, have you greased the carden joint? My truck has 190,000 miles on it and when I bought it six months ago the u-joints were really dry. I greased them all up and got rid of 50% of my vibrations.

Still having some issues I took my drive shaft in expecting to hear that I needed a new carden joint but mine was perfectly smooth. I had u-joints installed on both ends, had it straightened and balanced all for around $200.

I guess I would say be sure that's your problem before forking out the big bucks on a new joint.

Amazing how a bit of grease took care of 70% of the vibration. Guess i didn't really understand how the joint worked. Was thinking old school constant velocity '72 Impala type. Thanks.

 

U joints should be serviced EVERY oil change or MORE depending on driving conditions. This is the most common reason for ujoint failure and it can be avoided completely
