92 - 3.0 - A little grumpy when shifting...
Just a quick question, I've had this truck for about 9 months now, and it's always been a bit grumpy when shifting into second, third, fourth. No grinding sounds or anything, but especially when shifting into 2nd from 1st, I notice a bit of a bump when shifting, I hafta muscle it just a little bit into 2nd, 3rd, etc.. Seems to be easier/smoother after it's been driven/warmed up a little.
Anyhow - my question, is this indicative of a transmission problem? Or is this pretty standard shifting on a toyota truck?? The only other standard I've had was a newer honda, and it was silky smooth shifting.
Thanks guys
Steve

have you changed out the transmission gear oil lately? If not, and you want to, it would be a good time to go ahead and replace the shifter bushing with a Poly one from Marlin. When you have the shifter off to replace the bushing, you can refill your tranny through the shifter hole.
Those 2 things made a world of difference in my '88. Inexpensive, too.

yeah, it is worn out. swap that shifter seat, fill it up with Redline MTL and drive it. It'll last years and years. If the rest of the truck outlives the tranny, then go ahead and rebuild the tranny, but I wouldn't bother going in until it just won't shift anymore. these are old trucks!

+1 on the old truck comment! Yeah, try all of the above and you may well get some improvement - those are maintenance items you should do anyhow - but likely it'll continue to shift like an old truck! That's OK, as long as it's not grinding a lot it'll be fine long-term. And certainly it'll be a little worse when cold. Go easy on it until it warms up.
