You can't put the W56 behind a 3.0 because there is no bellhousing that has the 3.0 engine side bolt pattern and the smaller W series bolt pattern, and the W series trannies are WEAK compared to the R series ones. The best that you can do is get an R151F turbo tranny from an 86-87 22RTE truck and use the existing 3.0 bellhousing. That will allow you to have a lower first gear ratio (4.31 vs. 3.83) and also a geardrive 23 spline transfercase. This would be a bolt in application by the way. The only other way would be to swap in a 22RE/2RZ/3RZ engine. For the 22RE the W56 would be a bolt in swap. For the 2RZ/3RZ you could bolt up the W56 using the factory Tacoma bellhousing. For my truck I have a 98 Tacoma 2RZ with a Marlin 2/3RZ conversion bellhousing, R151F tranny, and dual 23 spline transfercases with 4.7 gears in the back case all sitting in the garage waiting to be swapped in.

Why would you want to?

seafarinman hit all the salient points ...

If you need a tranny, I have an R150 (V6, not turbo!) and tcase for sale.

I would use the r150 before the r151. The r151 has a 4:1 first (to make up for the power curve dip due to the turbo). I beleive that is too steep of a first for the v6

That may be true but it sure helps out on the crawl ratio when in 4-low especially if running a stock transfercase. On my truck when the R151F and dual ultimate crawler are installed will make up the difference in crawl ratio between 223:1(3.83x2.28x4.7x5.29) and the 244:1 (4.31x2.28x4.7x5.29).

If you're just about crawl ratio, why don't you put in a third case?

I'm at 200:1 (same as above but 4.88's in the diffs) and it's lower than you really need

223:1 is pretty ridiculous,

244:1 is ludicrous speed!

I would think the low first would be nice if you had dual stock cases
(4.13x2.28x2.28x5.29) = 114

I do have a third case, but I don't want to have to buy another dual case adapter and convert it to topshift (its a forward shift) to stack the third case, and I already bought the 4.7 gearset. Maybe a good idea to just sell the gearset and buy the adapter and convert instead. (4.31x2.28.2.28.2.28x5.29=270:1!!!)
