gas station overcharge fuel capacity

I filled up recently and was shocked at the price and then (82 22r) realized that I'd been charged for 13.5 gallons. Never ever in 8 years have i gone much above 12 when filling up and recently discovedred that my tank capacity is 12.5 approximately. I confronted the owner and he said by law he would have the pump checked and when I checked back he said the inspection had found it to be perfect. Anyone have any ideas?

that's crazy man...i always plug in the numbers when i figure my mileage to see just how accurate the pumps are, but luckily i haven't ran into your kind of problem. are you sure you didn't "cram" the gas in that time, b/c i can fit around an extra gallon in my tank if no-one's waiting behind me...

Yea One time they overfilled mine to around 14 gallons. Parked it at home and when it heated up the next day there was gas running down the fender. They filled it too full and it covered the vent.

thanks you guys. I'm guessing that the auto shutoff on the pump handle wasn't working right, but it did shut off automatically and I didnt try to top off.

The one girl here overfilled mine to the point where she was talking to me and it was coming out the hole and running on the ground so I grabbed the nozzle and shut it off. She didn't know what was going on. Thats why I always like to fill mine myself. The tank on the shortbed 82 is 13.5 gallons though so it could be you just used up more gas that usual and were ready to die.
