So someone turned left in front of me and my truck is considered a "total loss". It doesn't really seem repairable, but I'm wondering what it is worth in parts... I would lose $600 on my settlement if I choose to keep it, so assume that is the relative value we are dealing with here.

Should I keep it?

Specs:
1987 Toyota 4Runner SR5, 22RE, 5speed, 210K mi
- SR5 cluster
- Runs and drives flawlessly (even now, believe it or not!)
- Rear diff armor welded on to axle housing
- interior in very good condition
- Everything works on this truck
- Doesn't drip a drop of oil/coolant ANYWHERE

great wheeler project, if it still runs a drives do a sas and run with it, the fzj80 will pull it fine on a trailer

 

insurance probably wrote it off due to age, you should be able to repair that so long as the frame is still intact. if at all possible, i would keep it. i regret getting rid of my 86.

It would require you to:
-Remove hood and both fenders...easy stuff.
-Now, front support and side supports are welded together and to the firewall..easy to drill out spot welds and pull them off.
-Go to bone yard and get a complete front end.
-Drill extra plug weld holes as required to reinstall both side supports and front support. Best left to a body shop but can be done in garage.
-Bolt on fenders and hood. Paint and undercoat to finish.

Depends on how much money you want to spend to fix it.

 

I would keep it. It looks like it's in good mechanical shape.

I would maybe bend as much as I could back into place and play around with it. Take the opportunity to make it into a nice offroad rig and get to bend and saw stuff without ruining a perfect truck.

 

I think in order to make it trail ready I would have to use the hillbilly bodyshop method (tree, rope and reverse gear ) to straighten out the radiator support (so the fan has room to move w/ the engine before hitting the radiator), then just hammer the fenders out a bit so they weren't so mishapen. Find a cheap tube bumper that bolts to the bottom (the front mounts are hosed!). I'm trying to talk my bro into buying it so he can join me on my trail adventures.

mine looked like that the first time they totaled it. i pulled everything pretty close to spec with a come a long (sp). my hood was not bent, but i did replace one fender, bumper, valance, and all lights. i say keep it, front fenders are cheap, and i think hoods are as well. yep, looks real close to my damage.

 

i'd give you $600 for that beauty anyday

I would do a cab swap! From the looks of the pictures, the frame doesn't look damaged. I'm not real sure about the 4runners, but on my pickup I had to replace the whole cab, not just the front clip. Should take no less than a month to do, so long as you have a lot of time....I flipped my truck in the summer, so I had to quit the job, and I just worked on the truck to get it driveable again. Just don't sell it!

 

Two trees and a come along are better that way you can control the pull.
Bet you wont find another in as good a shape as the one ya got for 600 smackers. Shade tree is the only way!!!!

I say your on track with the come along and some trees. Pull it and drive it. Parts are cheap and if your in the south or west can usually get rust free parts or complete inner front end from junkyard.
