i love the smitty built bumpers (double front. double rear) so much.

they came w/my 2cnd toyota, and i want to put them on my new*(er) 1988 model before i sell the 86.

 

I have those on my 86 4Runner and love them too

 

How are theses bumpers attached to the frame. Are they strong enough to use recovery straps on if you were to mount D shackles on them? Are they strong enough to use a high lift jack on?

 

They are a little stronger than the stock bumpers. I used to use HiLift on mine ('85) but found I needed to jump on the side of the bumper I used to jack on to push it back down to sit level. Up front they have two bolts per side into the frame where the stock bumper attached then two more brackets that catch the front two body mount bolts.

 

that kind of looks like rancho dr and dacatur out here in vegas. also looks a bit like ocotillo, ca. its a desert in southern cali. your truck looks awesome

 

Can't speak to the jack.

I've seen them ripped off by a hard tug. I wouldn't pull from them personally. Use the stock tow hooks.

 

i used to have the smittybuilt neft bars when i first bought my truck. tried using the hi lift on them and all they did was bend.

 

Anyone know where I can get one for cheeps, and also how can I accomodate for 3" of lift?

 

Anyone know if you can get a wench attached to the truck using those bumpers. It is what I have on my 86, the double bars.

 

I suppose you could attach a wench any way you wish, though she may be pretty unhappy if it isn't inside the cab. Up to you though.

A WINCH on the other hand, is unlikely, but I'm not sure. They don't attach too securely to the frame, but you could likely adapt the bumper to make it work using some reinforcing steel plate to the front and the mount points. Requires welding though.

 

There are two versions of the Smitty bumpers, one for winch mounting and one plain double tube version. When I had my old double tube version, I looked into converting it for winch use. I compared the mounting points to a winch version and saw they were very different. I opted to sell my old bumper and buy a bumber set up for a winch.

 

My bad. I was referring to the double tube non winch ones. I haven't seen the winch one. Apologies for the blanket statement.

S%itty-built. I had them and by the time I finally took them off, they looked home made. I bent them, dented them, twisted, etc... They are great looking bumpers, but they are not thick enough for any type of abuse. I once saw one get completely ripped apart being tugged by a Jeep with a STRAP! Great for street queens, bad for real trucks.

 

Just found the front bumper. Still looking for the rear, they seem to be hard to find.

personally i think the front smittybuilts aren't the best for looks, the backs look fine though. and yeah i don't think they are actually strong so i don't know see the real point in them except a cheap bumper different than stock
