Question Portland, OR - Can I borrow your crankshaft pulley tool in exchange for beer?

Hi All,

I'm prepping to do a little maintenance on my '99 4Runner (3.4L v6); timing belt, water pump, AC/PS/Alt belts, etc. The only tool I'm missing for the job is a crankshaft pulley tool (the one that holds the crankshaft pulley in place while tightening it).

Would anyone in the Portland, OR (specifically Tigard) mind lending me their factory or homebrew tool to perform this job (or if you have the equipment to make a tool for me, I will reimb. you for parts and labor). You're more than welcome to sit and watch me bust my knuckles while drinking a few complimentary beers.

Thanks!

I am in the same boat as you and was thinking of tightening down the crank bolt as much as possible and then gingerly driving to the toyota dealership (3 miles from my house) and having them torque it down to spec.

I cannot find the tool around here for rent and don't wanna spring for a tool I will most likley only use twice..

I've called most of the metal shops in my area and no one is willing to furnish scraps to create the tool (as outline at www.4x4wire.com).

In the Haynes manual, they suggest putting a long screw driver into the driveshaft ring gear to prevent the crankshaft from spinning, but I'm a little hesitant to go this route. Anyone wish to provide feedback regarding this method?

If these are manual's you can have said beer drinker sit in drivers seat and hold the brake while its in gear so the crank wont turn while you torque the bolt down. If its an auto I don't know what to tell you.

You can make the tool out of a 2X4 if you need to....

Make your own tool with a 2x4 some 4" long 3/8 grade 8 bolts (lowes or depot).
Use 1.5" (1/2" OD with 3/8" ID) steel sleeves through the wood for some extra holding power.

Pretty simple really (pics at the end of the thread):

The 2x4 is exactly what I needed. Thank you Jamie!

And FYI - this vehicle is an automatic.

I have one of those chain wrenches and tried using it with a rag around my crank pulley and stopped because it was still chewing it up a bit.
