how can i tell what gears i have in rears?

i have an 87 4runner with a 5 spd 22re motor,how can i tell what gears i have ?it is stock.

The pinion will have a color code painted on the stub. The manufacturer's plate on the center of the firewall will also tell you.

Lift up one of your rear tires, make a mark with tape or chaulk on the tire and a refrense mark on your fender.

Then mark the driveshaft.

Spin the tire 20 times, take the number of rotations the driveshaft turns and divide it by 10. And thats your gear ratio.

For example:

Spin tire 20 times, driveshaft spins 45.6 times 45.6 divided by 10 = 4.56 gears.

Also, your door sticker should tell you what gears are in the truck, but they can be wrong.

Wow nice info... I always thought my gears in my 89 felt lower. but I had no idea they where 4.56's
