I have had a noise in my transmission for awhile that sounded like marbles rolling around inside it. I had pulled the tranny and replaced the clutch, pilot, and throwout bearings and still nothing. Didn't have time to do anything with the trans until my hg blew in May and have since redone the whole engine and now am tearing down the tranny.

There's a pic of the bearing that caused it all, can't believ this thing lasted about 8,000 miles like that. Believe it or not, everything else is fine. Unbelievable, only from a Toyota.

 

Can you please document the tranny rebuild please!! I have finally worked up the courage to tackle that job when it comes up --

was it when your at low rpms you can hear that marble noise?

im hoping this hasnt happened to my tranny as well...

 

I have the R150, but i'm sure they are all the same basic idea. I was very scared at first but someone put it together so why can't i take it apart right? (and i printed off an fsm) Removing the cases from the intermediate plate was pretty easy, and i just got the shift shafts and forks out last night and ran into a rut when i try to pull the first bearing, its kind of tricky. I will take pics from here on out and try to do a writeup. As far as finding the remains, didn't really, just a sort of metallic grease stuck to the magnet, some chunks of metal in the bottom, and metal flakes in the oil.

 

Shokk86: The clunking was weird, i don't remember too well as i havent driven the truck since June, but it wasn't real noticable until the higher gears or in neutral, im guessing because then there is less load on the bearing then and it allows the little cylinders in the bearing to rotate freely. When using the redneck stethoscope (long screwdriver) i could hear kind of where it was coming from, this bearing is all the way toward the front of tranny and on the bottom. The shifter itself never had any weird vibrations and it still shifted smooth and well. I put on alot of hard miles since it started making noise and it didn't hurt the tranny but if i would have known what was going on, i would've fixed it sooner.

 

Can I say good luck and take lots of pictures. First manual tranny I rebuilt was back in 75, my uncle helped me do it. We did really good till it came time to put the main shaft in and the picture in the Haynes manual showed the guy holding the damn thing backwards as he installed it. Took us an hour to figure that out then it fell right in. Take your time and all will be well.
