ok i lost all the fluid in my axel housing and when i got home it was smokeing on the differental. is there anything that i should look out for that would be broken.

if i just remove the bolts around the diff will i be able to seal it up good enough so it wont leak any more thanks

 

you will have to remove the axles to even get the diff. to move after removing all the diff. bolts. and i would check every bearing in the rear end for wear since you ran it dry.

 

can i get the diff to even move at all just to seal it up.

 

not without removing the axles. if you do so I would check everything like already stated and buy a rebuild kit. about $99 or so. its not to hard at all to rebuild the axle but it takes some time. get a few beers in ya and get r done

 

well i got it done without pulling the axels out just pulled the diff out like an 1/8 inch and should be good to go i hope.

 

ok the diff is sealed and now its leaking through the pinion seal. how long can i go with it leaking how it is as long as i keep it filled up.

 

If I were you I would do it right so it does not fail you when you really need it. I would not wheel or even drive something that I knew had a problem. Every time I pull my hubs off I parts tank them and completly check everything and re-grease them. I know it is kinda anal but I don't want it to fail when I really need it. Just get a case of beer and some friends and make a day of it. Just take your time and do it right. If it has a lot of miles on it I would do all bearings and seals since it is apart. Just my .02. Bill

 

Is your diff making an whining noises after this? Hypoid gears wear extremely fast if ran dry.

To replace the pinion seal means basically rebuilding the 3rd member. At this point, you have probably worn the pinion bearing to the point the slop is wearing the seal. Even if not, you are likely close to that point of wear.

I'm not sure what gearing you have but if it is stock, used 3rds are cheap. If you want to regear, now is a good time since half the labor is involved in rebuilding the rear diff so you might as well change the gears while it's apart. When that diff starts to go, you'll have only a few miles tops before you start to shear teeth so be advised, it could to months or hours but when it's gone you'll be driving in "4wd" which will then be FWD in your case.

It's your call though.

no noise at all i maby drove 10 miles with it dry. i think i will just swap a e locker in it and im also thinking about doin a full floter rear end. is it worth it to do the swap to full floater. thanks
