Just bought an 80 w/ lots of rust for $100 having a clutch problem...
Ok I bought an 80 pickup long bed 4x4 with the 4 speed today from a guy that thought it was a 5 speed 81 with 22re. I didnt care what it was because it was only $100 so I pulled it home nowing that the guy said that the transmission wouldnt shift because the clutch was badand the battery was dead. So when me and my buddy got home but in an old battery and 5 mins later it cranked and ran pretty good. It has a rebuilt carb on it an it wont idle down but i think i can figure it out ANY IDEAS are welcome about the idleing. BUT then we wanted to drive it off the trailer so i tried to get it in gear and it would olny go in reverse grinding with the clutch all the way down. If you cut the engine off and put it in gear then crank it the started tries to pull the truck. When it cranks the clutch is fine but you cant pull it out of gear to put it in the next.
o I suspect the slave cylinder. I looked at it and the adjusting nut is all the way out. It is the 3/4 cylinder. The truck is a 3/80 I think that matters. Maybe since it is the long bed I need the 13/16" It seems that it needs to push the clutch fork back further. Maybe the other cylinder is longer??? The clutch isnt slipping so I think it is fine. ANYBODY HAVE ANY IDEAS?? I think that this is my first truck to take me to TELLICO!!! AFTER BASICALLY REMOVING 500 LB OF BONDO.
Thanks Everybody>...

The clutch problem definitely sounds like a linkage problem, could be you slave cylinder (I really don't know that much, perhaps somebody else does?). The only thing I can suggest for the idle is maybe the Fast Idle isn't disengaging? My friends 83 did the same thing for a long while when he bought it. All He had to do was spray the choke and fast idle linkage with some carb cleaner and hit it with some compressed air. Just a thought.

Dang, when I first saw the thread title I thought you meant FJ80. Oh wells.
For your shifting issue, check the clutch fluid. If it's black and icky, put a new clutch slave cylinder in and flush the system. I like OEM parts and not your garden variety 'rebuilt' pieces.
For the fast idle issue, take the air cleaner off, and hose off the outside of the carburetor with carb cleaner with the engine OFF. Get all the linkages and widgets on the outside wet with carb cleaner. Perhaps put some rags underneath to soak up the excess. Let it sit for a while, then wiggle and jiggle everything to see if it comes off the fast idle cam when you open the throttle.

Very good idea to clean the carb it is very dirty and it look like a rebuilt unit on the front so I think the linkage could not be even intalled correctly but i hope a good clean will do the trick. ALso i noticed a lot of vacumm lines disconected so im sure this isnt helping the idle. It doesnt have to pass emisions inspections so can i remove a lot of the vacuum hoses except the distributor and pcv systems. Get rid or charcoal canister and egr. There are 4 little air opperated relay looking things on the passenger fender that have 2 hoses each that connect to them. What are they and so i need them because there are only 2 connected?
As for the slave cylinder I will flush the system and replace the slave with one from orielly's today or tommorrow I hopt that cures my problem. I think the one on it has been rebuilt with the wrong kit because with the adjuster all the way out it doesnt dissengage the clutch all the way.
If anybody has anymore ideas leave them here please.!!!
No it isnt an FJ80
I cant get that lucky.

Fixed the shift problems
Here are a couple of pics of my $100 truck (tires are well worth that) Its not pretty but maybe one day it will have a flat bed running on pane and a camo paint job.

PS Fixed the shifting problem with a new correct slave cylinder while keeping the old slave cylinders little rod that pushes the clutch fork(for some reason all of the new ones where too small in diameter. All I need to do now is fix the idle problem and start on tackling the rust problems on the cab.
