1983 Toyota fan hitting shroud

I just took my 1983 Toy out for the first time since putting a lift and 33's on it. Climbed a few rocks and heard a noise under the hood. The fan appears to be hitting the shroud especially at steep inclines. Any ideas on fixing the problem besides an electric fan?

Figure that you must have used a suspension lift since the fan would have started on the shroud right away with out lowering the radiator on a body lift. I would check your motor and transfer case mounts. The inclines might be enough to allow the weight of the engine etc to transfer.

post some pictures when you get the chance. Truck in your avatar looks nice

I just had the same problem with my '83 the left motor mount snapped and my fan hit my shroud at acceleration or climbing.

the shroud cools the motor better than without and should stay. like ocdropzone said i would also check your mounts

check your mounts, same thing happened on my '79. metal shroud shredded my plastic fan. New fan from the dealer was almost $80 so i got a generic electric for $110 and built a bracket for it. works great.

Yep, check the motor mounts for starters. Easy way to test is to place a jack under the oil pan (use a block of wood under the pan to protect it. Then start lifting. You should see the engine and chassis start to rise slowly as you take the engine weight off the frame. Then, if you see the chassis stop moving and the engine still lifting, then likely a motor mount is torn. Replace it and add a chain aroundit to stop future failure:

Also, check your steering box. I once had fan/shroud issues on the Rubicon. Seemed to happen when the truck was all twisted up in the rocks, went away on level ground. Could no see anything wrong at the time. About a mile later, figured out what was wrong, the steering box had nearly ripped off of the frame. It was being pushed into the fan shroud when turned hard and that caused the fan to hit it.

fixed

Thanks for all who replied. It was in fact my left motor mount $85 to replace both. The left one is not easy to replace. My 83 purrs like a kitten now. Next addition is a rear locker. I have read alot about the aussie locker. Any comment?

Glad you got the mounts fixed, you should be good for a long time. Your truck is pretty nice, thanks for posting a pic. I have been considering the Aussie Locker too, been hearing a ton of good things about it and seems to be reasonably priced...
