Muffler / Cat. Converter Swap.

So I'm having a thought here. I'm running a turbo'd 22re in my '94 pickup with a custom exhaust. As of now the exhaust just has a muffler in it (no cat), I can't even remember what kind of muffler I put in there. Now my thought here is, remove the muffler, and in its place put in a catalytic converter. I was thinking it may up my exhaust noise some, and with all of the gas this thing eats it will probably help out the environment a bit (Plus we may be getting emission checks here soon.) What do you all think about this route? If you suggest putting a cat in do you know of any reputable aftermarket high flow cat. suppliers? Thanks in advance!

i think there is a reason for having both - that would be annoyingly loud -

I do applaud you for taking the initiative to put a cat back on it

To be honest, I'm not really concerned with the noise. I ran this thing pouring exhaust out of the turbo downpipe for about a month, I figure if I can stand that I can still stand having a full exhaust system w/o a muffler. I was thinking the turbo + cat combo will dampen the noise enough so as not to be too ungodly loud. I'm actually looking to pick up a decibel or two.

It's fine. I ran a cat with no muffer for quite a while and it's really quiet on a turbo.

Guys without a turbo - the turbo creates more backpressure than your stock muffler, it's really a big mufller.

I've got an SRT-4 and it came factory w/o mufflers... The only time you'd need them is to pass visual inspection (in some areas).

Location of that converter is critical though...

Thanks for the input! As far as the cat location goes, I have no real experience with cat. converters but I imagine they probably work best the closer you can get them to your manifold/header. Of course you probably don't want them too close. So I'm just guessing. What do you say?

I would get as close to the original cat. position of 22rte as I could, or (correct me if I'm wrong) any 22r/22re engine.

Well, my muffler is about a foot behind the stock cat location right now. See any problems putting the cat in its place? Ittle be a bit further downstream, but like i said, only about a foot.
