Headlight wire tap locations

I am sure some of you guys have figured this out, but here it is anyways. If you want to tap into your low beam or hight beam lights to use as a switch power for other lights or accesories here is the skinny. I know this is good for '99 - 02 4runners. Other?????

When you look at the female plug for your head light bulb from the back, the female terminals facing away from you, the top wire is for high beam and the left wire is for low beam.

If it is an H4 or 9004 type connector, see below:

Otherwise, break out a test light or volt meter and pull the plug and check the pin voltages. Note that the wiring is likely switched ground, so the coomon pin will stay at 12 volts and then one or the other pin will be grounded to turn on the respective filament.

Headlight wire tap locations

Ok i see that this post is a month old. Did you have any problems with tapping into the headlight. Why i asked is i have a 86 4runner i wanted to be lazy an not route wires or put a toggle switch in so i tapped into the drivers side low beam plug.It worked good.So i cleaned up an headed off to work.It takes 20 min to get there as i drove up my lights hit the wall an i noticed that the drivers light was real dim an the lef light was normal brite. I also noticed the fog lights were not working. So i pulled the fog light wire out of the light an fig that the light would brighten back up "nope still dim" I went home at lunch an got another good light an it was dim to. I was p/o an thought i fried the the wireing for the lights. I have another 86 4runner parts truck an i pulled the wireing harness off it. I then thought i'll just change the light wires of the harness an i followed the wires an they end up at the fuse panel on the fender. I started thinking what if the fuse was bad so i looked an it looked good. then i started switching fuses around an then noticed that the light was bright an the other light was now dim ( WTF ) Anyway i put new fuses in all the slots an it works great, The fuse was bad an after looking on the fuse box top there is separate R/L Head light fuses. So if any of you have a bright light an the other dim. Check/replace with new fuses an if that doesnt work look for a short. I wont tap into the light (not good idea) at least on the older 86 4runner/truck
