I am not only new to the forum but to Toyotas as well, I just bought my first 4x4 in 15 years. I did a compression check on my engine and my #2 cylinder is only holding 90psi but the other ones are between 130-140psi so I think I need a head, but I dont know how to tell a 22r from a 22re my truck is carburated. My next question is how hard is it to install an efi engine in place of my carbed engine

 

you have the 22r .. 22re is the fuel injected model

how hard is it? Pretty simple if you know your way around these motors, but you dont since you didnt know what motor you had hehe

you can do a conversion on that 22r to a 22re.. its not 'easy' but definetly not incredibly difficult. Just sourcing all the right parts and such

The only draw back to the 22r is inclines and high altitude but if you're not concerned about hill climbs, decents or travelling in the high mountains theres really no good reason to convert to a 22RE, they get the same gas mileage and the power difference IMO is unoticeable.

Look into just fixing the motor you have and possibly rebuilding the carb and you'll be set.

I have almost a complete EFI set up for sale you would need injectors if you are interested I might be able to find some injectors at the u pull near me

 

I have an 87 yota, 4X4, with the 22r. i just blew up the engine and im wanting to put a 94 22re in it. i need wiring diagrams and maybe some tips.
how hard is it to do this swap? i everything. complete engine with wiring harness and ecu. but im wiring the ecu into the 87 cab harness.

low compression alone doesn't mean you have a bad valve/head. Did you try doing a quick "leakdown" check by adding some oil into the spark plugs holes? I would. If the compression goes up then it's your rings if compression stays the same it's either a head gasket or valves. Since your other 3 are about the same (although low min. spec is 150psi), I would lean towards rings or valves. Either way, a new headgasket would be put on. A real leakdown check with pressurized air will tell you valves or headgasket.
