Well I've been toying with the idea for a while and today my dad picked up a couple sheets of 4x8 plywood and some hinges. My idea was two slots for plastic cargo boxes and a cubby with a tackle box style trays. that didnt end up working out unfortunatly, that would have been pretty cool.
Instead I have two slots that go to about 8 inches back from the back of the seats and one that goes full length to the seats with no dividers on the ends for skis or shot guns . then betwee the two shorter slots and the seats a small hidey hole for handguns maybe . Then for when seats are down which is almost all the time there is a large sheet that folds over to cover the seat backs when they are down. Where the little cargo things in the back of the 4runner are, right behind the wheel well there is no ply wood so i can get to the holders.
To hold this whole thing down I used small turnbuckles conected to the factory tie down loops on wheel wells and back corners. There are no measurements and plans sorry, this was a build as we go project. its not quite done, I have to buy some bed liner material to cover the wood with still.

nice i've thought of doing something similar for a while... just havent had the time, energy or $$$ to do it...

 

use T nuts
That will give you more room for the bolted brackets that you are using.

Or use a biscuit jointer and biscuits to glue up the sides (hidden fasteners)

 

The brackets we used accually work great and are low profile.

This project cost about 50 dollars and took about 8 hours of work. my dad accualy bought 2 sheets of 4x8 ply and we used most of one. we have about 2 square feet left.

 

I like it - something I would have done in high school - works great for wheeling/campin!

 

You also want to get some 30' x 45' flat layer metal or any size that will fit from the side of the window were you'll be sleeping because I have heard that if you camp alone or in a group in the woods or any place that put yourself or other to sleep in your truck and if any crazy drunk redneck drive by and happen to see your truck there they will shoot at your truck for no reason, like in a drive by style so if you can protect yourself, use them. They said its best to sleep outside of the vehicle. If you put a vehicle in the woods and come back in one or 2 week and you will see what I am talking about... bullet holes!

 

ha ive not thought about a bullet shield but i usualy will be sleeping in a tent but depending on the circumstances i might just through a bag on there and sleep like on a trip. thats a good thought though.

 

Does anyone know of some fairly cheap rubber rolls like bed liner material but just a rectangular sheet?
