Went out wheeling the other night. Got into little mud.
Just today when driving home my brake pedal felt very soft. For some reason it just won't stop like it use to. I checked for bake fluid leaks and have found nothing. My next step is to pull off the rear drums as my e brake is not working how it use to. Have any of you come across before. Any suggestions?

For some reason mud don't like brakes.
First, clean everything up real good with wheels off. Flush and replace your brake fluid (would be a wise idea to change rear diff fluid too!). Inspect hoses. Drive and report.

 

What Rocket said + brake cleaner... and perhaps your rear drums are out of alignment if your e-brake goes up more than 5 clicks. If the drums are out of spec, your front rotors are doing more work than they should be. In which case, you'll probably end up warping them soon.

Find an open road. Accelerate to 10 miles per hour in reverse. Pull e-brake up over and over. Repeat process however many times as necessary to bring e-brake back down to 5 clicks.

 

I'm having a similar problem. I did all the cleaning to no avail. The reverse e- brake thing I have not tried. I hard do I pull it? Slow and steady or do I really yank it?

I just yank on the lever whenever mine need adjusting and I have never had any problems. It will work either way but you'll most likely have to repeat a lot!

 

1. Accelerate to 10 mph
2. Depress E-brake button - hold it down
3. Pull up and push down on the E-brake lever quickly over and over
4. Repeat until you get 5 clicks

 

Thanks! I gave it a whirl but I think I need to do it more. I don't think my rears were even working at all! The first 7 or 8 pulls didn't slow it a bit. the last couple did a little.

 

I would recommend pulling your drums and a Good clean and lube (brake job??) on your shoe adjusters. I have seen a few 4x4s with silt and mud caked in every crevis of the drums/shoes causing similer problems.

 

Took me about 5 times accelerating to 10 mph in reverse, and 30 pulls on the e-brake before it made a significant difference. Like I said, do it until you get closer to 5 clicks on the e-brake.
