code 52 & erattic idle on start up

I have searched the threads containing code 52 and have gathered alot of info. At the risk of being redundant, here is my question.
I just bought a 1989 toy 4x4 with a v-6 and a 5 speed, ac,manual hubs and 182,000 on it. I paid $1,200 for it and the guy I got it from said the previous owner had just dumped $3,000 into the top end. When I start it up the idle surges up and down just like I am sitting in it reving it up. As soon as it warms up (the cooling gauge hits about a quarter of the way) it idles normal. The cel light comes on shortly after that. I jumpered the wires E1 and Te1 as directed and got code 52. I have the info thanks to all of your previous threads. Yesterday just out of curiosity, when I started it in the morning I popped the hood while it was doing its usual revving. I took the hose off that runs from the air intake to the valve cover on the driver side. Not the big hose but the smaller black hose with the black plastic elbow on it. (what i thought was a pcv valve) when I pulled it off the engine idled fine, when I put it back on it started surging again. Other than the surging and the cel appearing it runs great with lots of power. i am in california and need to get this puppy smogged. I would really appreciate any feedback you all might have. I have always had Nissans and decided to make a change, but now I think I just made a big mistake instead.

$3000 on a top end? Good lord, that's excessive. I hope the PO got the gold inlaid valve covers and intake for that.

Are you sure it's a code 52? That's the knock sensor and I can't imagine it running well and having much power at all in that case, but I could wrong.

When you pull the breather hose and runs better, does it do that when cold also?

Yeah thats what i thought. Yes the only time it surges like that is when it is cold and if I pull that breather hose it idles high but doesn't surge. When it warms up and I take that hose off it doesn't idle so well. Today I noticed it was pinging a little but it still has power. I have rechecked the code and it flashes 52. I waited about 5 minutes to see if it would flash any other codes like my nissan.

This just occured to me....
When you pulled that breather hose did you plug the end of the hose?

Check the timing and your fuel pressure regulator.

Thanks, I just went out and started it again at first normal high idle. Then about a minute later the surging started. I pulled the hose and it went back to normal high idle, when I put my thumb over the hose it surges again. Dashpot? Coldstart injector/sensor? Thanks again

No, it doesn't sounds either of those. Look at the two things already mentioned. How does it respond to throttle engagement and release? I'm kinda thinking the VAF meter. If it test fine, check the wiring connections at the harness and all.

We could narrow it down here, but that's a mighty kind offer above me. I'd take him up on it. It's good to have another set of eyes and hands lookin' at it.

Last night I decided to take a good look at the vacuum lines. I found some cracked ones and replaced them. Today I am going to check the two items as suggested. Then I am done! Thanks thook for your input and I think you are right about Chris's offer.
Thanks Chris, I will be calling you this week for a diagnosis and to see if you have 1 used wilderness LT235/75/15.

Oh Sh!!!t,
Chris, I am soooo sorry I forgot to call you! Your magic only lasted while you were in my truck. It turned back on when I drove off. So I was thinking maybe you should sit in it when I bring it in to your shop to get it smogged. Really thanks alot for the tire and I totally zone out when I am on a mission. I checked some relays as per the info provided by thook, thanks. I will be asking some more questions tomorrow as well as give you the results of what I did check. Thanks you guys. Oh yeah I couldn't check the timing because I don't have a tach so I will be getting one tomorrow as well.
