Help with my new corolla
Ok so I know it isn't a truck or SUV, but the motor is closely related to those in our trucks and SUVs. I picked up a carburated 89 corolla dirt cheap, but it has almost no power. It's a 1.6L, DOHC, 16v, 2BL. It starts up and idles fine, but only works with like 10% throttle or less. If you give it any more it chokes. While idling, if you rev it up fast you can sometimes hear a backfire. Any ideas what could cause this?
Here's what I've done so far
-I checked the cam timing and that was fine.
-Ignition timing is dead on
-I bypassed the fuel filter and it was exactly the same, so that's fine
-I checked the mechanical fuel pump with the directions giving here http://www.autozone.com/az/cds/en_us...rInfoPages.htm and it passed those tests.
-185-190PSI compression in each cylinder
I thought the engine wasn't getting fuel, but the filter seems to work and so does the pump. Or is it possible the pump works, just it doesn't supply enough fuel? This is the first carburated car I've worked with so I've been checking everything around it with no luck. Any ideas? Thanks

I've got an '88 Nova which has the same engine as a '87 Corolla, with the carb.
I'd check your intake manifold for deposits. If you've got blockage, that would cause a similar problem. I think you're going to have to remove the head to clean it up, otherwise that stuff will drop into the engine.
Good luck.
