1992 22RE engine will not turn over?

I have a 1992 Toyota 22RE, 4X4 with 247,000 miles. I installed a new battery after the truck has sat for a few months. The truck cranked right up and never missed a beat. I drove the truck to work the next morning with no problems. When I proceeded to go home, the truck failed to crank. The truck would click lightly as I turned the key, and then do nothing. Sometimes the buzzer would sound if you put the key in and sometimes it would not. The truck would not even turn over when jumped off from another vehicle. I swapped the new battery for a newer battery (they said it checked out un-stable). When hooking up the battery, I could see it had fire. The lights would burn, but all of the symptoms returned as soon as I turned the key. I?m at a loss. Does anyone have any ideas?
